Narita has a humid subtropical climate shaped by its position 60 km east of Tokyo and about 10 km inland from the Pacific coast. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cool and mostly dry, and two rainy windows (the June tsuyu season and the September to October typhoon months) bring most of the year’s 1,400 mm of rainfall. This guide gives Narita weather by month with exact temperatures, rainfall, and sunshine hours, whether you are transiting the airport or staying longer. For which months to pick, see the best time to visit Narita guide.

Narita Weather at a Glance

Narita’s hottest month is August, with an average high of 31°C (88°F) and lows around 23°C (73°F). The coldest is January, with highs of 9°C (48°F) and lows that dip to -1°C (30°F). Annual rainfall is about 1,400 mm, and humidity sits above 70% from June through September, which is why summer feels hotter than the thermometer suggests. Snow is rare but possible one or two mornings a year. For the wider context and where to base yourself, see the Narita travel guide page.

Narita Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

December through February is the driest, clearest stretch of the year, with 45 to 60 mm of rain per month and sunshine of 160 to 190 hours. Days reach 9°C to 11°C (48°F to 52°F) but nights fall below freezing, so pack a warm coat, especially for early-morning flights. This is a comfortable season for walking Omotesando Street and the temple grounds without the summer heat. For the temple, street food, and plane-spotting sights, see the things to do in Narita guide. Airport train fares and SIM cards are covered in the Narita travel tips and FAQ guide.

Narita Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

Spring warms quickly: March averages 13°C (55°F), April 18°C (64°F), and May 22°C (72°F), with rainfall climbing from 100 mm to 120 mm. Cherry blossoms in Naritasan Park usually peak in late March to early April, a week or so earlier than central Tokyo, and the plum blossoms start in late February. Late April to early May is Golden Week, Japan’s busiest domestic holiday period. For the full calendar, see the events and festivals in Narita guide.

Narita Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)

June opens the tsuyu rainy season, with 160 mm of rain and humidity near 80%, while July and August are hot and sticky at 28°C to 31°C (82°F to 88°F) with 120 to 130 mm of rain. July brings the Narita Gion Festival, but August is the most uncomfortable month for walking the temple approach. Hotel prices at the airport stay steady in summer since families transit through NRT on the way to other destinations. For which area fits your trip, see the Narita neighborhoods guide.

Narita Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)

September is the wettest month of the year at 200 mm as typhoon season peaks, and a passing typhoon can delay flights and close the Skyliner for hours. October eases to 21°C (70°F) and 180 mm, and by November the weather turns crisp and dry at 16°C (61°F) with just 90 mm. Late November to early December brings the best autumn foliage in Naritasan Park. For hotels near the airport, temple, and station, see the where to stay in Narita guide.
