Launceston has a cool temperate climate that feels nothing like mainland Australia. Tasmania’s second city sits in the Tamar Valley at about 40 metres above sea level, sheltered from the coast by hills, which gives it drier, sunnier summers and colder, foggier winters than Hobart. Average annual rainfall is around 680 mm, falling fairly evenly across the year. For the full city picture, start with the Launceston travel guide.

Launceston Weather in Summer: December to February
Summer is the driest, warmest time of year. January averages 25°C (77°F) by day and 11°C (52°F) at night, with only about 33 mm of rain and roughly eight hours of sunshine. Heatwaves push the thermometer past 30°C (86°F) a few days each year, but the air stays dry. This is the best season for the best time to visit and for walking Cataract Gorge in the cool of the morning.
Launceston Weather in Autumn: March to May
Autumn cools quickly but stays settled. March still averages 23°C (73°F), while by May the daytime high drops to 15°C (59°F) and nights fall to 4°C (39°F). The Tamar Valley’s vines and oaks turn gold and red, and clear, crisp days make this a good time for the things to do in Launceston list. Pack layers, as mornings can be several degrees colder than the afternoon.
Launceston Weather in Winter: June to August
Winter is cold and foggy. July is the coldest month with an average high of just 12°C (54°F) and a low of 2°C (36°F), and frost forms on most clear mornings. Thick valley fog can sit over the city until mid-morning, which sometimes delays flights into Launceston Airport. August is the wettest month at about 73 mm. Snow does not fall in the city, but it does on Ben Lomond, a 45-minute drive east. Heated indoor attractions like QVMAG and the Launceston neighborhoods pubs make winter manageable, and the travel tips and FAQ page has packing advice.
Launceston Weather in Spring: September to November
Spring warms steadily from 15°C (59°F) in September to 20°C (68°F) in November, with blossom on the streets and wildflowers in the reserves. Rain sits around 46-53 mm a month, and lavender begins to colour at Bridestowe from late November. Decide where to base yourself using the where to stay in Launceston guide and check the events and festivals calendar before you book.
