Otaruβs hotels split between two walkable zones: the canal area for scenery and the station area for convenience and price. You do not need a car in either, as the canal, Sakaimachi and the station sit within a 15-minute walk of one another. Here is where to stay in Otaru by area, with three picks per zone. For the full picture, start from our Otaru city guide.
Where to Stay in Otaru: Canal Area
The canal area (Ironai) puts you beside the evening gas lamps and the warehouse restaurants, and it is the most atmospheric place to sleep. Rooms cost more here, from about Β₯12,000 to Β₯25,000 a night, and you trade a short walk to the station for canal views from your window. Snowy winters make the canal rooms worth it, as the Otaru weather by month guide explains.

Where to Stay in Otaru: Station Area
The station area (Inaho) is the practical choice for train travellers and budget stays, with business hotels and a covered shopping arcade right outside JR Otaru Station. Prices run about Β₯6,000 to Β₯15,000 a night, and the canal is a 10-minute walk south. This is the handiest base for the things to do in Otaru list.
