Mathura has a semi-arid climate (Koppen BSh) on the western Gangetic plain, 174 m above sea level and about 145 km south of Delhi. The city gets roughly 640 mm of rain a year, but three quarters of it falls between July and September, so the rest of the year stays dry. Temperatures swing more than 35°C between January (average 15°C) and May (average 35°C), which means what you pack depends entirely on the month. This Mathura weather by month guide covers temperatures, rainfall, humidity and sunshine hours so you can plan a comfortable visit. Start with the full Mathura travel guide for an overview.

The pattern is simple: a long, dry heat from March to June, a short intense monsoon from July to September, and a mild, clear winter from November to February. Summer afternoons regularly exceed 40°C, while winter nights can dip below 7°C in January. See our best time to visit Mathura guide for season-by-season advice.
Mathura Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)
December, January and February are the most comfortable months, with daytime highs of 24°C to 28°C and nights cooling to 7°C to 10°C. January is the coldest month at 24°C (75°F) by day and 7°C (45°F) at night. Rain is almost nil, with 5 mm to 15 mm a month, and skies are usually clear, though December and January bring morning fog that can delay trains. Pack a light jacket or shawl for early mornings and evenings, especially if you plan to sit through the riverside aarti after sunset. The things to do in Mathura guide has a fuller list.
Mathura Weather by Month: Summer (March to June)
Temperatures climb fast from March, when highs reach 34°C, to a scorching peak in May, the hottest month at 43°C (109°F) with lows that stay near 28°C even at night. April and May routinely see heatwaves above 45°C, and the sun is intense from late morning to 4 pm. June stays just as hot but brings the first pre-monsoon showers and rising humidity. If you travel between March and June, do your temple visits before 10 am, rest through the midday, and carry water. Few tourists choose this season, so hotels run at their cheapest. The Mathura events and festivals calendar lists exact dates.
Mathura Weather by Month: Monsoon (July to September)
The southwest monsoon arrives in early July and drops the bulk of the year’s rain: July gets about 190 mm, August 180 mm and September 105 mm. Humidity sits at 70 to 80% throughout, and although daytime highs ease to 34°C to 37°C, the heat feels heavier than in summer. Streets flood briefly after downpours and the ghats become slippery, but the Yamuna runs full and the temples are far less crowded. Carry an umbrella and waterproof shoes, and expect occasional train delays. See the Mathura neighborhoods guide to compare areas.
Mathura Weather by Month: Post-Monsoon (October to November)
October and November are the sweet spot after the rains. October still reaches 34°C by day but nights cool to 19°C, and by November highs drop to a pleasant 29°C with lows near 14°C. Rainfall is just 5 mm to 20 mm, skies are the clearest of the year, and the air is at its cleanest before winter fog sets in. Diwali, which usually falls in October or November, is a superb time to see the ghats lit with oil lamps. Compare hotels in the where to stay in Mathura guide.
