Margaret River is not one town but a string of settlements spread along 50 km of coast and forest, each with a different character. The main town handles dining and shopping, Yallingup and Dunsborough face the beaches, and Augusta anchors the rugged southern tip. This guide breaks down each area, who it suits, and roughly what you will pay to stay there, as part of the full Margaret River travel guide.
Margaret River Neighborhoods: Town Centre
The commercial hub, a strip of cafes, bakeries, wine bars, and bottle shops along Bussell Highway, home to about 5,000 residents. Stay here if it is your first visit and you want restaurants, the Saturday farmers market, and the visitor centre within walking distance. Hotels run from about AUD 180 a night for a motel room to AUD 450 for a suite at the heritage Grand Mercure Basildene Manor. It is the best base for day trips in every direction, since Caves Road north and Bussell Highway south both leave from here. The things to do in Margaret River guide maps the wineries, caves, and lighthouses within an hour’s drive.
Margaret River Neighborhoods: Prevelly and Gnarabup
A beachside hamlet 10 minutes from town where the Margaret River meets the ocean at Surfers Point. It is the surf hub, with the Margaret River Pro held here each April and a small strip of cafes and holiday houses facing the waves. See the best time to visit Margaret River guide for the swell season here. It suits surfers, couples, and anyone who wants to hear the ocean at night. Self-contained houses and apartments dominate, from about AUD 250 a night in summer, and there is no big hotel, so book early.
Margaret River Neighborhoods: Yallingup
The northern surf and wine pocket, wrapped around Yallingup Beach, Ngilgi Cave, and a cluster of founding wineries including Vasse Felix and Cullen. It draws a slightly older, wine-focused crowd than Prevelly. Cape Lodge and Seashells sit here, with rooms from about AUD 300 a night, and the heritage Caves House Hotel offers the cheapest beds in the area from around AUD 150. The Margaret River weather by month guide shows why Yallingup’s exposed coast cools off fast in winter.
Margaret River Neighborhoods: Dunsborough and Bunker Bay
The family beach town on the calm, north-facing shore of Geographe Bay, where the water is shallow and safe for small children. It has the most conventional holiday feel of any area, with a main street of cafes, a foreshore playground, and the Pullman Bunker Bay Resort tucked behind the dunes. Expect AUD 250 to 500 a night for self-contained villas. It is also the closest base to Busselton Jetty and the Busselton Margaret River Airport. See the where to stay in Margaret River guide for prices and picks in each area.
Margaret River Neighborhoods: Cowaramup
A small dairy town 15 minutes north of Margaret River, known locally as Cow Town for the life-size fibreglass cows along its main street and the candy and chocolate shops. It is a quieter, cheaper alternative to the main town, with farmstays and cottages from about AUD 160 a night. It suits families and couples who want countryside quiet with the wineries of Wilyabrup a five-minute drive away. For driving and airport logistics, see the Margaret River travel tips guide.
Margaret River Neighborhoods: Augusta and Cape Leeuwin
The southern anchor, 30 minutes from Margaret River town, built around the Blackwood River estuary and the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. This is whale-watching country from June to November and the gateway to Hamelin Bay and the southern end of the Cape to Cape Track. It is quieter and cheaper than the northern towns, with motels and holiday units from about AUD 150 a night. The Margaret River events and festivals guide covers the whale season dates here.
