Shenyang spreads across a dozen districts, but visitors mostly move through four or five of them. The historic core is Shenhe, the commercial and Korean-food centre is Heping, the north holds the railway station and Beiling Park, and Dadong has the Fuling tomb and the 9.18 Museum. This Shenyang neighborhoods guide breaks down each area by what it is known for, who it suits, and roughly what hotels cost. See our Shenyang weather by month for more. Shenyang Neighborhoods: Shenhe District

Shenhe is the historic and administrative core, bounded by the Hun River to the south and containing the Mukden Palace, Zhongjie shopping street, and Marshal Zhang’s Mansion. It suits first-time visitors who want to walk between sights. Hotels here run the full range, from budget Atour properties around 300 CNY a night to the Conrad and Shangri-La at 600 to 1,200 CNY. Shenyang Neighborhoods: Heping District

Heping is the commercial centre, home to Taiyuan Street shopping, Zhongshan Square, and the Xita Korean street. Qingnian Avenue runs down its eastern edge with high-rise hotels and offices. It suits business travellers, shoppers, and anyone who wants Korean food on the doorstep. Mid-range chains cluster here at 350 to 600 CNY a night. See our things to do in Shenyang for more.

Shenyang Neighborhoods: Huanggu District

Huanggu sits north of the centre and contains Shenyang North Railway Station and Beiling Park with the Zhaoling tomb. It suits rail travellers and park visitors who want a quieter stay, and it is the cheapest of the central districts, with plenty of rooms at 200 to 400 CNY a night near the station. See our Shenyang events and festivals for more.

Shenyang Neighborhoods: Dadong District

Dadong lies to the east and holds the Fuling tomb and the 9.18 Historical Museum. It is mostly residential and less touristed, so it suits visitors on a budget or anyone focused on the eastern sights. Hotels are limited, so many visitors stay in Shenhe and travel over for the day. Shenyang Neighborhoods: Hunnan New District

Hunnan, south of the Hun River, is the new development zone with the Liaoning Provincial Museum, the Olympic sports centre, and wide boulevards. It suits museum-goers and families, though it is a metro or taxi ride from the historic sights. Hotels here are modern and mid-priced, mostly 300 to 500 CNY a night.
