The best time to visit Khao Lak is between November and March, when the Andaman Sea is calm, monthly rainfall drops below 200 mm, and the Similan and Surin Islands are open for diving. This is also peak season, so prices climb. The rest of the year splits into a hot shoulder season in April and the wet southwest monsoon from May to October, when the islands close but hotel rates fall by 40 to 60 percent. Start with our Khao Lak travel guide for an overview, then here’s exactly when to come for each kind of trip.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak for Weather
December to February delivers the most reliable sun, with daytime highs of 32°C to 33°C (90°F to 91°F), only 22 to 60 mm of rain a month, and 8 to 9 hours of sunshine a day. November and March are still good but less certain, with 194 mm and 44 mm of rain respectively. For the full monthly numbers, see our Khao Lak weather by month breakdown. If you want guaranteed beach days, lock in mid-December through February and book flights 3 to 4 months ahead.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak for Diving and Snorkeling
The Similan and Surin Islands open from mid-October to mid-May. Visibility is best from late November to April, reaching 20 to 30 metres at sites like Richelieu Rock, Elephant Head Rock, and Christmas Point, where you’ll see manta rays, whale sharks, and reef sharks. Liveaboard trips run all season, while day trips to the Similans take about 90 minutes by speedboat from Thap Lamu pier. The park shuts entirely from mid-May to mid-October. See our things to do in Khao Lak guide for the top dive operators.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak on a Budget
May to October is low season, and it’s when Khao Lak is cheapest. Beachfront resorts drop their rates by 40 to 60 percent, and you can often find 4-star rooms for under 2,000 THB (about US$55) a night. The trade-off is rain, around 370 to 462 mm a month, mostly as afternoon downpours. August is the pick of the wet months because of its regular mid-monsoon dry spells. Our where to stay in Khao Lak guide lists the resorts that stay open all year.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak for Festivals
Come in mid-April for Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival on April 13 to 15, or in November for Loi Krathong, when locals float candlelit krathong baskets on the water during the full moon. December brings Christmas dinners and New Year beach parties across the resort strip. Every major festival is covered with exact dates in our Khao Lak events and festivals guide, so time your trip around one if you want to see Thai culture at full tilt.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak: The Month to Avoid
September is the month to avoid. It averages 462 mm of rain, the most of the year, with 24 wet days, and the monsoon can flood low-lying roads and shut smaller resorts. The Similan and Surin Islands are closed, and some beachfront restaurants board up for the season. If September is your only window, pick a resort with strong reviews and plan inland activities, but expect to lose several afternoons to heavy rain.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak’s Beaches
For swimming and paddleboarding, aim for December to April, when the sea flattens and water temperatures sit at 28°C to 30°C (82°F to 86°F). Each beach behaves slightly differently through the seasons, from the gentle slope at Nang Thong to the longer, wilder stretches up north, and our Khao Lak beach areas guide breaks down each one.
