Guwahati stretches 20 km along the south bank of the Brahmaputra, with the old trading centre around Paltan Bazaar and the newer business districts spreading south along GS Road toward the airport. Each area has a distinct character, and hotel prices vary sharply between them. See our weather by month guide for more.

Best Neighborhoods in Guwahati: Paltan Bazaar and Fancy Bazaar

Paltan Bazaar, around the railway station, is the historic commercial core and the budget-travel base. It is a 12-minute walk from the station to the Assam State Museum, and the Fancy Bazaar silk and handicraft market sits just to the west. Hotel prices here are the lowest in the city, with clean three-star rooms running β‚Ή1,200 to β‚Ή2,500 a night. It suits rail passengers, market shoppers, and anyone who wants to be in the middle of things, but expect noise and traffic. See our best time to visit guide for more.

Best Neighborhoods in Guwahati: GS Road and Khanapara

GS Road (Guwahati-Shillong Road) is the main southbound artery and home to the city’s five-star hotels, including the Novotel and Vivanta, plus malls and business offices. Khanapara, at the southern end, is closest to the airport side of town and to the Assam State Zoo. Rooms here run β‚Ή6,000 to β‚Ή12,000 a night at the top properties. It suits business travellers and anyone flying in or out, since it cuts the airport transfer to about 30 minutes. See our events and festivals guide for more.

Best Neighborhoods in Guwahati: Uzanbazar and the Riverfront

Uzanbazar, on the north side of the centre along the Brahmaputra, is the boarding point for the Alfresco Grand cruises in summer and home to the Umananda Temple ferry ghat. It has a few boutique guesthouses and is quieter than Paltan Bazaar. It suits couples and anyone planning a river cruise, and it is the best base for the riverfront attractions. Accommodation here is limited, so book early in the January peak. See our travel tips guide for more.

Best Neighborhoods in Guwahati: Ganeshguri and Hengrabari

Ganeshguri, east of the centre near Dispur, is a mid-range commercial and residential area with good restaurants, supermarkets, and the road toward Kaziranga and Shillong. Hengrabari, just south, holds the Assam State Zoo. Hotel prices here are mid-range, roughly β‚Ή2,500 to β‚Ή5,000 a night. It suits families and self-drivers heading east on NH37, and it is the closest base to the east-side wildlife and nature day trips, though you will spend more on autorickshaws to reach the temples. See our Guwahati travel guide guide for more.

Best Neighborhoods in Guwahati: Dispur and Six Mile

Dispur, the capital complex of Assam, and the Six Mile junction are administrative and residential districts southeast of the centre. They are quieter and greener than the bazaar areas but have little for tourists beyond a few restaurants and the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra nearby in Panjabari. Rooms are mid-range, β‚Ή2,000 to β‚Ή4,500 a night. Choose this area only if you have government business or want a quiet, leafy stay away from the city buzz. For a full comparison of where to sleep, see the where to stay guide.
