The best time to visit Guwahati is November to March, when the monsoon has cleared, daytime highs run 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F), and nights are cool. This window avoids the heavy June-to-September rains and the sticky pre-monsoon heat of April and May. See our neighborhoods guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Guwahati for Good Weather

November to March is the dry, mild season. December and January are the coolest, with highs of 24 to 25°C (75 to 77°F) and lows near 11 to 13°C (52 to 55°F), so you need a light jacket after dark. February warms to a 27°C (81°F) daytime high and is the driest comfortable month for sightseeing. This is the exact period covered in the Guwahati weather by month guide. See our travel tips guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Guwahati for Festivals

Guwahati’s festival calendar drives peak occupancy. Rongali Bihu, the Assamese New Year, falls around April 14 and fills the city with Bihu dance performances and feasts. Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya Temple runs June 22 to 26 each year and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, with the temple sanctum closed June 23 to 25. If you want Bihu without the heat, time your trip for Bhogali Bihu (Magh Bihu) in mid-January instead. Details on all of these are in the events and festivals guide. See our Guwahati travel guide guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Guwahati for Wildlife

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, 48 km east of the city, has the world’s highest density of one-horned rhinos. Its jeep safaris run best from November to April, when the tall elephant grass has been trimmed after the monsoon and animals gather at waterholes. Kaziranga National Park, a 4 to 5 hour drive, opens for the season from November 1 to April 30. Skip the monsoon for wildlife, as both parks close their tracks when the Brahmaputra floods. See the things to do in Guwahati guide for safari prices.

Months to Avoid in Guwahati and Why

June through September is the monsoon, with 200 to 325 mm of rain per month and humidity above 80 percent. Streets in low-lying areas like Bharalumukh flood, and day trips stall. April and May are dry but hot, with 32°C (90°F) highs and pre-monsoon humidity that makes temple queues uncomfortable. Unless you are coming for Ambubachi Mela in late June, avoid the monsoon months. For hotel prices, note that where to stay in Guwahati rates peak in January and during festival weeks and drop by 30 to 40 percent in July and August.
