Gangtok spreads along a single ridge, so its neighborhoods string out north to south rather than radiating from a center. Most first-time visitors stay near MG Marg in the middle of town, while budget travelers head to Deorali in the south and resort seekers go to the Ranka side in the north. Hotel prices below are average walk-in rates and rise in the October and March peaks, the two best times to visit.

Gangtok Neighborhoods: MG Marg and Arithang (City Centre)

MG Marg and the adjacent Arithang ward form the walkable core, centered on the pedestrian-only main street. This is where most restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and the Tourist Information Centre sit, and the Paljor Stadium and several luxury hotels are a short walk away. It suits first-time visitors and anyone who wants to step out the door to dinner. Mid-range hotels here run about Rs 2,000 to 5,000 a night, and budget options start near Rs 1,200. For hotel picks, see the where to stay in Gangtok guide.

Gangtok Neighborhoods: Deorali (South, Budget)

Deorali, south of the center, holds the SNT bus stand, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and Do-drul Chorten, and it is the budget end of town. Guesthouses and hostels here start around Rs 800 a night, and the shared-jeep stands for Rumtek and South Sikkim leave from this side. It suits backpackers and anyone arriving by bus who wants to be near the transit hubs, though it is a 15 to 20 minute uphill walk or a short taxi to MG Marg. The travel tips guide covers the bus and shared-jeep routes, and the weather by month data shows the monsoon months when the walk turns muddy.

Gangtok Neighborhoods: Tadong and Lower Samdur (Residential)

Tadong and Lower Samdur, southeast of the center, are quieter residential areas near Sikkim Manipal University and a few larger resorts. The Mayfair Spa Resort sits in Lower Samdur, and several mid-range business hotels cluster along the NH10 approach road. It suits families and longer stays who want space and quiet, with mid-range rooms from about Rs 2,500 to 6,000 a night and easy taxi access to town and to the events and festivals that use venues on the south side.

Gangtok Neighborhoods: Ranka and the Rumtek Road Outskirts

The Ranka side and the road toward Rumtek, north and east of town, is the resort belt, with Taj Guras Kutir, Sterling Orange Village, and several spa properties set in gardens with valley views. Rooms run Rs 3,000 to 12,000 a night, and the trade-off is a 20 to 30 minute drive to the center. It suits couples and honeymooners who want a quiet, view-heavy stay, and the Rumtek Monastery is on this side of town.
