The best time to visit Gangtok is October to November and again in March to April, when skies are clear, temperatures are mild at 17 to 21°C (63 to 70°F), and the risk of road-closing landslides is low. Avoid June through September, the monsoon, when the city receives most of its 3,600 mm of annual rain and landslides regularly cut the mountain roads. Winter from December to February is dry and bright but cold at night.

Best Time to Visit Gangtok: October to November (Autumn)

October and November are the single best window for weather. Rain falls to 40 mm in November, humidity drops below 70%, and post-monsoon clarity gives the sharpest views of the Kanchenjunga range from Tashi Viewpoint. Daytime highs of 17.6 to 20.7°C (64 to 69°F) are comfortable for walking. The trade-off is crowds: the Dasain and Diwali holidays in October and November fill hotels, so reserve at least a month ahead. Cross-check the numbers in our weather by month article before you book.

Best Time to Visit Gangtok: March to April (Spring)

March and April are the second-best window, with highs of 18.3 to 20.9°C (65 to 70°F), 116 to 289 mm of rain, and rhododendrons blooming across the surrounding hills. The International Flower Festival runs through spring, and monastery courtyards host early Buddhist ceremonies. April is wetter than March, so aim for March if you want the driest spring weather. The neighborhoods guide will help you pick a base for this season.

Best Time to Visit Gangtok: December to February (Winter)

December to February is dry and clear but cold, with nights dropping to 4 to 5°C (39 to 41°F) and days reaching only 12 to 14°C (54 to 57°F). Snow is rare in town but common at Nathu La and on the way to Tsomgo Lake, which can freeze over. This is the cheapest season for hotels outside the Christmas to New Year peak, and the Losoong festival falls in December. Bring a heavy jacket, and check the things to do list for indoor options on cold days.

Best Time to Visit Gangtok: June to September (Monsoon, Avoid)

June through September is the season to avoid. July alone averages 650 mm of rain, humidity runs 80 to 90%, and landslides frequently close National Highway 10 and the road up from Siliguri for hours or days. Flights into Pakyong Airport are often cancelled in heavy rain. Hotel prices do drop by 30 to 40%, and the waterfalls run full, but the risk of being stranded outweighs the savings for most visitors. The travel tips article explains your transport options if you do come in this window.

Best Time to Visit Gangtok: Cheapest Months

The cheapest months are January, February, and the monsoon months of July and August. In January and February, mid-range rooms fall to about Rs 1,500 to 2,500 a night, while monsoon discounts of 30 to 40% are common in July and August. Flights into Bagdogra also soften outside the March to May and October to December peaks. For specific hotel picks by price tier, see our where to stay in Gangtok guide.
