Tepoztlán sits at 1,700 metres (5,577 ft) in the Sierra de Tepoztlán, a valley ringed by cliffs in northern Morelos, about 70 km south of Mexico City. The elevation keeps temperatures mild all year, from an average low of 9°C (48°F) in January to a high of 29°C (84°F) in April and May. Rain is the real seasonal driver: the dry season runs November to April, while the rainy season delivers most of the year’s roughly 560 mm between June and September. This guide breaks Tepoztlán weather down month by month so you can plan around the rain, and pairs with our best time to visit Tepoztlán guide.

Tepoztlán Weather by Month: The Dry Season (November to April)

From November through April skies stay mostly clear and rain is rare. February is the clearest month, with clear or partly cloudy skies 68 percent of the time, and the whole stretch is when most visitors come. Nights get cool at this altitude, so pack a jacket even when the afternoons hit 26°C.

November

Highs settle around 26°C (78°F) and lows drop to 11°C (51°F) as the rains have finished. Expect about 10 mm of rain across roughly two wet days. This is a reliable month for hiking the Tepozteco trail, and it marks the start of the clear, dry stretch covered in our Tepoztlán weather by month breakdown.

December

The driest month of the year, with about 3 mm of rain and fewer than one wet day on average. Highs reach 24°C (76°F) and lows dip to 9°C (48°F). Christmas and New Year bring weekend crowds, but the weather is close to perfect for the pyramid climb.

January

The coolest month, averaging a high of 24°C (76°F) and a low of 9°C (48°F), with only about 8 mm of rain. Mornings can feel cold before the sun clears the cliffs. Daytime is ideal for walking the barrios, while nights call for a sweater.

February

Highs rise to 26°C (79°F) and lows to 10°C (50°F), with barely 5 mm of rain. February is the clearest month of the year, so views from the Tepozteco pyramid are at their best. It is also Carnaval season, which you can plan around with our Tepoztlán events and festivals calendar.

March

Temperatures climb toward 28°C (82°F) by day and 12°C (53°F) at night, still with only about 5 mm of rain. The spring equinox around March 20 to 21 draws hundreds of people in white up the Tepozteco trail before sunrise.

April

The hottest month alongside May, averaging 29°C (84°F) by day and 14°C (57°F) at night. Rain is still light at about 10 mm. This is the peak of the dry-season tourism window and a strong choice if you want heat without mud.

Tepoztlán Weather by Month: The Rainy Season (May to October)

From late May the afternoon storms arrive, and by June the skies are overcast most of the time. Rain falls as heavy late-afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle, so mornings stay usable for hiking. September is the cloudiest month, overcast or mostly cloudy 87 percent of the time.

May

The transition month. Highs stay near 29°C (84°F) but rain jumps to about 41 mm across nine wet days, usually late in the afternoon. Early May is still dry and popular, but the trails turn greener as the month goes on.

June

The rainy season arrives in force with about 127 mm of rain over 20 wet days. Highs ease to 27°C (80°F) and lows hold near 16°C (61°F). Morning hikes still work, but plan indoor stops for the afternoon storms.

July

The wettest month, averaging 135 mm of rain across 22 wet days. Daytime highs sit around 26°C (78°F). Bring a proper rain jacket and waterproof footwear; the Tepozteco trail gets slick and can close in heavy weather. More packing detail is in our Tepoztlán travel tips guide.

August

Almost as wet as July at 132 mm, and the month with the most rainy days at 22.6 on average. Highs stay around 26°C (78°F). Rain typically falls between 4 pm and 9 pm, so an early start still buys you a dry hike.

September

Rain eases only slightly to 130 mm and cloud cover peaks. Highs drop to about 25°C (77°F). September 7 to 8 brings the Reto al Tepozteco festival, a major event that runs rain or shine and is covered in our events guide.

October

The rains taper off to about 51 mm, mostly in the first half of the month, and highs hold near 26°C (78°F). By late October the dry season is effectively back, making this a good shoulder-month bet for lower prices and green scenery.
