The Dunhuang event calendar is anchored by one major international expo in September, plus the two national Golden Week holiday rushes and the lunar festivals. Exact dates shift with the lunar calendar, so confirm before booking flights. For the weather during each event, cross-reference the Dunhuang weather by month page.

Dunhuang Events and Festivals: Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo

The Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo is held every September at the Dunhuang International Convention Center. The 8th edition opened on September 21, 2025, drawing more than 1,200 guests from 97 countries. Expect exhibitions on Dunhuang Academy research, Belt and Road cooperation, intangible cultural heritage, and fine arts, plus evening performances. Book rooms months early if you plan to attend; see the where to stay in Dunhuang page for areas near the venue.

Dunhuang Events and Festivals: Chinese New Year (January or February)

Chinese New Year, the Spring Festival, falls between late January and mid-February. Dunhuang is quiet, many restaurants close for the first few days, and temperatures sit below freezing, so it suits travelers who want the Mogao Caves nearly empty. The off-season cave ticket (140 CNY, twelve caves) applies, and it is one of the cheapest periods in the best time to visit Dunhuang calendar.

Dunhuang Events and Festivals: Mid-Autumn Festival (September or October)

The Mid-Autumn Festival lands on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, usually September or early October. At Crescent Lake under a full moon it is a local tradition to picnic and view the moon over the dunes. Expect larger evening crowds at Mingsha Mountain, and book tickets ahead. Nearby dates often overlap the September cultural expo window.

Dunhuang Events and Festivals: National Day Golden Week (October 1 to 7)

National Day Golden Week runs October 1 to 7 and is the busiest travel week of the year in China. Dunhuang fills with domestic tourists, hotel prices double or triple, and Mogao Cave tickets sell out for the entire week. If you must travel then, book every ticket and room at least a month ahead. Otherwise follow the shoulder-season advice in the Dunhuang neighborhoods guide and come a week later.

Dunhuang Events and Festivals: Labor Day Golden Week (May 1 to 5)

The May 1 to 5 Labor Day holiday is a shorter but still crowded window. Weather is excellent, with May highs around 27Β°C (81Β°F), which makes it one of the most pleasant but busiest times to visit. For practical transport and booking advice across both Golden Weeks, read the Dunhuang travel tips page and the Dunhuang city guide.
