Dunhuang is a two-day minimum destination: one day for the Mogao Caves and the desert, a second for the Silk Road fortresses and the night market. Everything below lists real ticket prices in Chinese yuan (CNY) and current opening hours. For how these fit a full itinerary, see the best time to visit Dunhuang guide.
Things to Do in Dunhuang: Silk Road Heritage Sites
Mogao Caves
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, the Mogao Caves hold about 492 decorated grottoes, 45,000 mยฒ of murals, and more than 2,000 painted sculptures carved into a cliff 25 km southeast of town. You start at the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center at 8899 Yangguan East Road, watch two films, then ride a shuttle to the caves. Peak season (April 1 to November 30) costs 238 CNY for the A ticket (two films plus a guided tour of eight caves); the off-season A ticket (December 1 to March 31) costs 140 CNY and covers twelve caves. Only 6,000 A tickets are released per day in peak season, so book online several days ahead. Opening hours run 8:00 to 18:00 in peak season and 9:00 to 17:30 in winter.
Yumen Pass (Jade Gate)
Yumen Pass, about 90 km northwest of the city, was a fortified Han dynasty checkpoint on the Silk Road from around 110 BCE. You walk through the restored gate and a small museum of Han border relics. Entry costs about 40 CNY and it combines naturally with a stop at the Han Great Wall remnants nearby. Bring water; there is no shade.
Yangguan Pass
Yangguan, roughly 70 km southwest, guarded the southern Silk Road route out of China. The site has a small museum, a reconstructed watchtower, and wide views over the Gobi. Entry is about 50 CNY. Most people pair Yangguan with Yumen Pass in one long half-day drive, which local drivers charge around 400 to 500 CNY for.
Things to Do in Dunhuang: Desert and Nature
Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake
Mingsha Mountain, the singing sand dunes, rise 5 km south of the city center next to Crescent Lake (Yueyaquan), a spring-fed pool shaped like a crescent. The scenic area costs about 120 CNY in peak season and 60 CNY off-season. A 40 to 60 minute Bactrian camel ride adds about 100 CNY, and sandboarding and dune climbing are extra. Camel rides run from before sunrise to sunset, so aim for dawn or dusk to beat the midday heat and the tour groups. Check the Dunhuang weather by month page to time the temperature.
Yadan National Geopark (Ghost City)
Yadan National Geopark, about 180 km northwest of Dunhuang (a 2.5-hour drive each way), is a field of wind-carved yardang formations nicknamed the Ghost City. A shuttle bus loops the main viewpoints; the best light is late afternoon. Entry plus shuttle runs about 120 CNY. It is a full-day excursion, so book a private car rather than public transport. Pair the planning with the Dunhuang travel tips page.
Han Dynasty Great Wall Remnants
Dunhuang sits on the line of the Han Great Wall, and near Yumen Pass you can see rammed-earth wall sections and beacon towers from the first century BCE, some of the oldest surviving Great Wall construction in China. There is no separate ticket beyond the Yumen Pass entry.
Things to Do in Dunhuang: Markets and Museums
Shazhou Night Market
Shazhou Night Market on Yangguan East Road is the main evening scene in Dunhuang. Entry is free, and it opens around 17:30, hitting its liveliest stretch between 19:30 and 22:00 and running until about 2:00. Local specialties include donkey meat yellow noodles (lวrรฒu huรกngmiร n), apricot tea, lamb skewers, and dried fruits. It is a ten-minute walk from most hotels listed in the where to stay in Dunhuang guide.
Dunhuang Museum
The Dunhuang Museum, on Yangguan East Road in the city center, is free and covers Silk Road trade, the Han dynasty frontier, and copies of Mogao Cave murals. It opens daily from 9:00 to 17:30, closing the last admission around 17:00. It is the best rainy-day or heat-of-the-day stop before you visit the Dunhuang events and festivals or explore the Dunhuang neighborhoods on foot.
