Palenque is visitable all year, but the experience changes sharply with the season: clear cool mornings from December to April, brutal heat in May, and afternoon downpours from June to October. The best time to visit Palenque for most travellers is late November to February, when the rain eases and the temperature mean sits near 24 to 26 degrees Celsius (75 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit).

Best Time to Visit Palenque: December to February

December through February is the sweet spot. Rainfall drops to 65 to 115 mm a month, highs stay near 29 to 30 degrees Celsius (84 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit), and the nights cool enough to sleep without air conditioning. The trade off is price and crowds: this is peak season, so hotel rates run 20 to 30 percent higher and the ruins are busiest between 10:00 and 14:00. Book where to stay in Palenque at least a month ahead for this window. For transport and money details, see our Palenque travel tips guide.

Best Time to Visit Palenque: March to April (Driest, Hottest)

March and April are the driest months of the year at 60 mm and 55 mm of rain, so you are almost guaranteed dry days. The catch is heat: April highs average 35.1 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) and regularly pass 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the right choice only if you can be at the archaeological site at its 8:00 opening and back at the pool by early afternoon. Carry rehydration salts and expect hotel pools and air conditioning to earn their cost. See the full monthly numbers in our Palenque weather by month guide.

Best Time to Visit Palenque: May to October (Avoid the Heavy Rain)

Avoid the wettest core, September and October, unless your whole goal is seeing the waterfalls at full flow. September gets 405 mm of rain over 19 days and October 285 mm over 15 days, and this stretch carries the highest hurricane risk of the year. June, July and August are only marginally better at 205 to 280 mm a month. Trails turn to mud, and the Agua Azul falls can run brown after heavy storms. If you do come this season, plan outdoor time for mornings and keep an afternoon indoor backup. For what to see on the clear mornings, read our things to do in Palenque list.

Best Time to Visit Palenque: For Lower Prices

The cheapest time to visit is the shoulder months of May, June and November. Hotel rates drop as the crowds thin, and you can often find mid range rooms for 30 to 40 percent less than December prices. November is the best value pick because the rain is already tapering to 150 mm while the forest is still lush and green. Check our Palenque neighborhoods guide to see which areas drop their rates most in these months.

Best Time to Visit Palenque: For Events and Festivals

Plan around a couple of key dates. The spring equinox, on March 20 or 21, draws visitors to the ruins for sunrise light and shadow effects, and Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2 fills the town with altars. Early August brings the Fiesta de Santo Domingo, Palenque town’s patron saint celebration with parades and music. The full calendar is in our Palenque events and festivals guide.
