León’s calendar is anchored by two major events, the solemn Semana Santa processions in spring and the rowdy San Froilán fiestas in October, with food, music and medieval markets filling the months in between. Most events are free to watch and cluster in the old town. This guide, part of our León city guide, lists the key dates so you can time a visit around them, and for the weather you’ll face at each, see the León weather by month guide.

Events and Festivals in León: Winter and Spring

Semana Santa (Holy Week)

León’s Holy Week, held in late March or early April, is one of the most important in Spain and is officially of international tourist interest. Thousands of hooded penitents, or papones, from the city’s cofradías carry elaborately carved pasos through the old town in processions that run from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. The most moving is the Procesión del Encuentro on Good Friday morning in the Plaza Mayor. Hotels book out months ahead, so reserve early through the where to stay in León guide if you’re coming for this.

Carnaval

Carnival fills the streets in February with costume parades and children’s events. It’s a smaller affair than in Cádiz or Tenerife, but the Saturday parade through the centre and the burning of the sardine on Ash Wednesday eve keep things lively. It’s a good, inexpensive time to visit before the spring crowds arrive.

Events and Festivals in León: Summer

Fiestas de San Juan y San Pedro

The San Juan and San Pedro fiestas run from around 23 to 29 June and mark the start of summer with bonfires on the night of San Juan, street concerts, and a fairground on the edge of the centre. Bars in the Barrio Húmedo run at full capacity, and there are usually free open-air concerts in the Plaza Mayor and the San Marcos esplanade. The dates are fixed each year, so the 23rd is the night to look out for the bonfires.

Summer concert and film programmes

Through July and August the city council runs free cultural programmes, including open-air cinema in parks and music in plazas. The exact line-up changes yearly, but the August events calendar is published on the city’s tourism website in early summer. These are casual, free and mostly aimed at locals, so they’re a low-cost way to spend a warm evening, and the things to do in León guide has more ideas for summer days.

Events and Festivals in León: Autumn and Winter

Fiestas de San Froilán

San Froilán, the city’s patron saint, is celebrated around 5 October with the biggest party of the year. The programme includes the Cantaderas ceremony, which re-enacts the medieval tribute of a hundred maidens, a large medieval market, concerts and fireworks. The medieval market now runs over the weekend before the main fiesta, so expect costumed stalls, falconry displays and street food from late September. It’s one of the best times to see the city at full energy, and it pairs well with the mild October weather covered in the best time to visit León guide.

Festival de Cine de León

León’s film festival runs in November and screens Spanish and international independent cinema across several venues, including the Teatro Emperador. Screenings are cheap and many are open to the public, making it a good indoor activity for the cold, wet months.

Christmas markets

From early December the city centre lights up with a Christmas market and seasonal stalls around the Plaza Mayor and Calle Ancha. The city is cold and dark in December, but the illuminations and the nativity scene in the Plaza de San Marcelo give the old town a festive feel. It’s a quiet, low-cost season to visit if you don’t mind the chill, and the León neighborhoods guide covers the central districts where most of the stalls set up.

Whatever event brings you to León, the practicalities of getting there and tipping customs are covered in the León travel tips guide.
