Denver sits at exactly 5,280 feet (1,609 m) above sea level, which is where it gets its “Mile High City” nickname and much of its unusual weather. The altitude gives Denver a dry, semi-arid climate with roughly 300 days of sunshine a year, low humidity, and big swings between day and night temperatures. You can expect snow as early as September and as late as May, but it usually melts within a day or two because of the strong high-altitude sun. Line up dates using our events and festivals guide.

Denver Weather by Month: Winter
December through February are cold but often sunny. December and January average 17 cm of snow each, and Denver’s Chinook winds occasionally push temperatures over 15°C (60°F) for a day before they drop back. Nighttime lows sit around -8°C (17°F), so pack a real winter coat, gloves, and boots if you are walking between downtown hotels. The airport and downtown are both well cleared after storms, but mountain passes on I-70 need chains or snow tires from November to April.
Denver Weather by Month: Spring
March is actually Denver’s snowiest month at 27 cm (11.4 in), which surprises visitors who arrive expecting spring. April warms to a 16°C (61°F) high and 27 cm of rain and snow combined. May is the wettest month of the year at 55 mm of rain, with thunderstorms gathering most afternoons. Spring weather changes fast, so bring layers and a light rain jacket, and plan for one or two days when a late snowstorm shuts down the drive into the mountains.
Denver Weather by Month: Summer
June, July, and August are warm and dry, with July peaking at 31°C (88°F) and only 53 mm of rain. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast most days between 3 and 6 pm, then clear out by evening, so hike early. The low 15°C (59°F) nighttime low means you will want a light jacket for outdoor concerts at Red Rocks even in July. Sun intensity is high at altitude, so wear SPF 30 and drink more water than usual.
Denver Weather by Month: Autumn
September is one of the best months, with a 25°C (77°F) high and clear skies, though the first snow can arrive by late September. October cools to 18°C (65°F) and brings 11 cm of snow, and the aspen trees in the hills turn gold between mid-September and early October. November drops to an 11°C (52°F) high with 18 cm of snow as winter returns. Denver Weather by Month: What to Pack
Year-round you need layers: Denver can swing 25°C (45°F) between the morning low and afternoon high in any season. Snow months (November to April) need warm boots and a waterproof jacket, summer months need sunscreen, a brimmed hat, and a packable rain layer for afternoon storms. Because humidity is low, skin dries out fast, so lip balm and moisturizer help most visitors in their first few days.
