Dalian divides into a downtown core around Zhongshan Square, a beach and university strip to the west in Shahekou, and two outer districts, Jinshitan to the northeast and Lushun to the southwest, that work as day trips. Each area has a different price point and character, laid out below alongside the climate notes in the Dalian weather by month page and the wider Dalian travel guide.

Dalian Neighborhoods: Zhongshan District (City Centre)

Zhongshan is the downtown CBD, anchored by Zhongshan Square and the pedestrianised Russian Street, with the port, the main railway station, and most corporate hotels along Renmin Road. It suits first-time visitors who want restaurants, metro access, and the colonial architecture within walking distance. Hotel rates here run the highest in the city, with mid-range rooms at CNY 400 to 650 a night. It is also where most of the hotels in the where to stay in Dalian guide sit.

Dalian Neighborhoods: Shahekou District and Xinghai Bay

Shahekou runs west from the centre and contains Xinghai Square, Xinghai Bay Beach, Sun Asia Ocean World, and the city’s universities and software park. It is the best base for beachgoers and families, slightly cheaper than Zhongshan, with mid-range rooms from CNY 350 to 550. The area is quieter at night and connects to downtown on Metro Line 1. Several of the top things to do in Dalian, including Xinghai Square, sit right here.

Dalian Neighborhoods: Jinshitan and the Development Zone

Jinshitan, in Jinzhou District about 40 km northeast, is the resort zone built around Golden Pebble Beach, Discovery Kingdom theme park, and golf courses. It suits families on a beach holiday and business travellers to the adjacent Development Zone. Hotels here skew to large resorts like the Hilton, and prices peak in July and August. Transit details for reaching it are in the Dalian travel tips article.

Dalian Neighborhoods: Lushunkou (Lushun)

Lushunkou, at the southern tip of the peninsula, is the historic naval port of Port Arthur, with war museums, the 203 Highland, and the June cherry orchards. It is not a base most visitors choose for a hotel stay, since it is 40 km from the centre, but it works well as a day trip on Metro Line 12. Budget guesthouses there run under CNY 200 a night. The history here is a major part of the city’s Dalian events and festivals.
