The calendar of events and festivals in Burgos is anchored by the Fiestas de San Pedro in late June and the traditional El Curpillos celebration in early summer, with religious processions, food fairs and music filling the gaps through the year. Most events are free and centred on the Plaza Mayor, the cathedral and the Paseo del Espolón. Here is what to plan around, season by season. The things to do in Burgos list covers the main sights with hours and prices.
Events and Festivals in Burgos: Spring
Semana Santa (Holy Week)
Holy Week falls in March or April depending on the year, with processions every evening from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday. The most atmospheric are the night processions on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, when hooded penitents carry carved pasos through the darkened old town. Streets around the cathedral close to traffic, and hotels book out weeks ahead, so plan with the where to stay in Burgos guide early.
El Curpillos
Held on the Friday after Corpus Christi, usually in late May or early June, El Curpillos is the city’s most traditional single day. The procession of giants and big-heads (gigantes y cabezudos) walks from the cathedral to the Monastery of Las Huelgas, followed by a picnic and open-air dancing in the monastery grounds. It dates from a 14th-century victory celebration and remains the event where you see Burgos at its most local. The Burgos neighborhoods guide compares each district.
Events and Festivals in Burgos: Summer
Fiestas de San Pedro y San Pablo (late June)
The biggest party of the year runs for about a week around the feast of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June. Expect free open-air concerts, a fireworks display over the river, food stalls selling morcilla and pinchos, and late-night crowds across the centre. The bullfighting fair runs at the Coliseum at the same time. This is the liveliest week to visit, but prices for the best rooms in the where to stay in Burgos guide rise and sell out early.
Festival Internacional de Folklore
Usually held over several evenings in July, this festival brings folk dance and music groups from around the world to the main stage near the Espolón. Performances are free, and the groups also parade through the centre during the day. Check the official city events calendar for the exact dates, which shift slightly each year. The Burgos travel tips guide covers transport and practicalities.
Events and Festivals in Burgos: Autumn and Winter
Fiestas de San Lesmes (late January)
San Lesmes, the city’s patron saint, is honoured around the last weekend of January with a shorter, winter version of the summer fiestas. There is a procession, a medieval market and street food, but on a much smaller scale than June. It is a good reason to visit in the low season, when hotel rates are at their lowest, as the best time to visit Burgos guide explains.
Cabalgata de Reyes and Christmas Markets
The Three Kings parade rolls through the centre on the evening of 5 January, with floats throwing sweets to children. Through December the Plaza Mayor and surrounding streets host a small Christmas market and nativity displays. Combined with the cold but rarely snowy weather covered in the Burgos weather by month guide, it makes for a quiet, traditional end to the year.
