Gramado sits at 830 metres (2,723 ft) in the Serra Gaucha highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state. Its humid subtropical climate (Cfb under the Koppen system) produces mild summers, cold winters, and rain in every month of the year. The annual average temperature is 16.7C (62F), and the city receives around 2,000 mm (79 in) of rain a year, so pack an umbrella no matter when you go. Gramado Weather by Month: Summer (December to February)

Summer is Gramado’s warmest stretch and the wettest season of the year. January and February both average highs of 27C (81F) and lows of 17C (63F), while December averages 27C (81F) high and 16C (61F) low. Rain arrives as late-afternoon thunderstorms, with December receiving about 170 mm, January about 180 mm, and February about 165 mm. Humidity sits near 80 percent, so hot days feel heavier than the thermometer suggests. This is peak holiday season for Brazilian families, so the things to do in Gramado attractions and hotels are at their busiest and most expensive during the first two months of the year. Gramado Weather by Month: Autumn (March to May)

Autumn is a transition season with cooling nights and the lowest rainfall of the year. March still reaches 25C (77F) by day with a 16C (61F) low and about 150 mm of rain. By May the temperature drops to a 19C (66F) high and 10C (50F) low, with crisp mornings and about 145 mm of rain. The autumn foliage across the araucaria pine forests peaks in April and May, and crowds thin out noticeably after the summer school holidays end in early March.

Gramado Weather by Month: Winter (June to August)

Winter is cold, dry, and the season that defines Gramado’s identity as Brazil’s alpine-style resort. June averages a 17C (63F) high and an 8C (46F) low, while July is the coldest month at 17C (63F) high and 7C (45F) low. Night temperatures regularly drop toward 0C (32F), frost is common in the early morning, and light snow falls on a handful of days each winter, more often in nearby Canela and Sao Francisco de Paula than in the town centre. June receives about 165 mm of rain, July about 175 mm, and August about 155 mm. Bring a proper coat, beanie, and layers; many older hotels lack central heating, and rooms are warmed with electric heaters or fireplaces.

Spring warms up fast and brings the year’s heaviest rain. September reaches 20C (68F) by day with a 10C (50F) low and about 180 mm of rain.
