The best time to visit San Jose del Cabo for most travelers is November through April, when daytime highs sit at 25 to 30degC (77 to 86degF), rain is nearly zero, and humidity stays low. December through February delivers the most reliable weather but also the highest prices, while April and November offer a cheaper compromise with only slightly warmer days. The single worst window is September, when heat, humidity, and hurricane risk all peak together. Here is the season by season breakdown so you can match your dates to what matters most, from whales to wave size to hotel rates.
Best Time to Visit San Jose del Cabo for Weather
November through April is the clear winner for weather. Highs average 25degC (77degF) in January and 29degC (84degF) in November, nights cool to 13 to 17degC (55 to 63degF), and monthly rainfall stays under 10mm. You will rarely see a cloudy day. May and June are still dry and warm (30 to 32degC, or 86 to 90degF) but noticeably more humid. July through September brings heat above 33degC (91degF) plus the rainy season, so plan indoor and water activities for those months. For a full month by month breakdown, read our San Jose del Cabo weather by month guide.
Best Time to Visit San Jose del Cabo for Whale Watching and Wildlife
Whale watching runs from mid-December through mid-April, with February as the peak month. Humpback whales and gray whales migrate past the southern tip of the peninsula, and you can see them from shore at Costa Azul or book a two hour panga tour out of the San Jose del Cabo marina for around US$60 to US$90 per person. Sea turtle hatchling releases happen from August through December at Playa Hotelera and nearby nesting beaches, and birders can spot 125 plus species year-round at the San Jose Estuary. If wildlife is your priority, target February and March, and stay near the marina using our best neighborhoods in San Jose del Cabo guide.
Best Time to Visit San Jose del Cabo for Lower Prices
The cheapest months are September and October, when resort rates fall 40 to 60 percent below winter peaks and you can find a decent hotel room for under US$100 per night. The tradeoff is heat, humidity, and hurricane risk. May and early June are a smarter budget window: weather is still dry and warm, prices sit 20 to 40 percent below winter, and the crowds are gone. August is also inexpensive and great for swimming, though hot and humid. Avoid the two weeks around Christmas, New Year, and US spring break (mid-March), when prices double or triple. Check where to stay in San Jose del Cabo for hotel areas and rates.
Best Time to Visit San Jose del Cabo for Events
Plan around the calendar if you want a specific event. The Thursday Art Walk runs weekly from November through June, the Los Cabos International Film Festival lands in November, and Sabor a Cabo, the big food and wine festival, happens in December. Gastrovino Baja brings a food and wine weekend in May, and the Los Cabos Open of Surf contests the Zippers break in June. Dia de los Muertos on November 1 and 2 fills the historic center with altars and parades. Our San Jose del Cabo events and festivals guide lists dates and locations for every major event.
Best Time to Visit San Jose del Cabo for Surfing and Water Sports
Surfers should target summer, when southern hemisphere swells light up the east facing breaks. The Zippers wave at Costa Azul is at its best from May through October, and the Los Cabos Open of Surf runs there in June. Snorkelers and swimmers get the calmest, clearest water in the Sea of Cortez bays from June through October, when the sea hits 27 to 29degC (81 to 84degF). Winter brings bigger Pacific swell and windier conditions, better for advanced surfers than beginners. Sportfishing for marlin and dorado peaks in late summer and fall, with the big money Bisbee tournaments in October over in Cabo San Lucas. Pair your surf trip with our things to do in San Jose del Cabo list for non water days.
When to Avoid San Jose del Cabo: The Worst Months
September is the month to avoid: it averages 90mm of rain, highs of 33degC (91degF), the highest humidity of the year, and sits at the statistical peak of hurricane season. August shares the heat and humidity with only slightly less rain. Late March into early April brings the heaviest crowds of US spring break, when flights fill and hotel rates spike. If you can only travel in summer, go in June, which is still dry with warm water and prices before the rainy season really starts.
