Lijiang spreads across three historic old towns and a modern New Town, and each has a distinct character. Dayan is the busy center, Shuhe is the calm middle option, and Baisha is the quiet rural original. This guide breaks down what each area offers, who it suits, and typical room rates. For specific hotels in each district, see our where to stay in Lijiang guide, and for the overall orientation, start with the Lijiang travel guide.
Lijiang Neighborhoods: The Three Old Towns
Dayan Old Town (Lijiang Ancient Town)
Dayan, usually just called Lijiang Old Town, is the historic heart with cobbled lanes, canals, and the central Sifang Jie square. It is the most convenient base, with the highest density of guesthouses, restaurants, and souvenir shops, and it is where the Lijiang events and festivals calendar comes alive during festivals. It suits first-time visitors who want to step out the door into the old town, with rooms from about 100 CNY for a basic guesthouse up to 2,000 CNY and more for courtyard boutique hotels.
Shuhe Old Town
Shuhe sits 8 km north of Dayan and feels like a quieter version of it, with wider lanes, tea houses, and leather workshops around its central square. It suits couples and travelers who want the old-town atmosphere with fewer crowds and easier sleep, and the things to do in Lijiang you would do from here are the same mountain day trips. Room rates average a little below Dayan’s, roughly 150 to 1,200 CNY a night.
Baisha Village
Baisha, the oldest of the three towns, is a small rural village about 12 km north known for its murals and slow pace. It suits photographers and culture-focused travelers who want the most authentic Naxi village feel, and it is especially pleasant in the shoulder months described in our best time to visit Lijiang guide. Guesthouses here are mostly converted farmhouses running about 80 to 400 CNY, but dining options thin out after dark.
Lijiang Neighborhoods: New Town and Practical Areas
New Town (Xincheng)
The New Town stretches south and east of Dayan and is where locals live, shop, and eat. It holds the modern hotels, banks, supermarkets, and the main bus station, and prices run lower than inside the old town, with chain hotels from about 200 to 600 CNY. It suits budget travelers and anyone who wants air conditioning and reliable heating, which matters because the Lijiang weather by month guide shows winter nights below freezing.
Around Lijiang Railway Station
The railway station sits in the south of the New Town and is the arrival point for high-speed trains from Kunming and Dali. The area has budget hotels for early departures, mostly 100 to 300 CNY, but little else to do. It suits travelers with an early train and nothing more; a taxi or Didi into Dayan takes about 20 minutes, and our Lijiang travel tips page covers the train and Didi logistics.
