Lijiang packs three UNESCO-listed old towns, a 5,596 m snow mountain, and one of the deepest river gorges on earth into a single valley. Most travelers base themselves in Dayan Old Town and use it to reach the mountain, Shuhe, Baisha, and Tiger Leaping Gorge. Start with the Lijiang travel guide for an overview, and read our Lijiang neighborhoods guide to choose a district.

Things to Do in Lijiang: The Old Towns and Museums

Dayan Old Town (Lijiang Ancient Town)

The 800-year-old Dayan Old Town is the core of Lijiang and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Its cobbled lanes, stone bridges, and canals were built by the Naxi people, and entry is free in practice, though an 80 CNY “ancient town maintenance fee” exists on paper and is rarely collected from walk-in visitors. The main entrance is at the Water Wheels (Shuiche) on the north side, and the central square, Sifang Jie, fills with dancing in the evenings. Plan two to three hours to wander, check the Lijiang events and festivals calendar if you want to catch a festival, but avoid the loudest bar street, Xinhua Jie, if you want quiet.

Mu Family Mansion (Mufu)

The Mu Family Mansion was the palace of the Mu clan that ruled Lijiang for centuries, and it sits at the south end of Dayan near the Loyalty Arch. The current complex is a 1990s reconstruction of the Ming-era original, laid out around courtyards and halls with a viewing platform on Lion Hill. Entry is about 60 CNY, and it opens roughly 8:30 to 17:30. The rooftop terrace looks over the old town rooftops, and there is an audio guide available in English.

Black Dragon Pool (Heilongtan)

Black Dragon Pool is a landscaped park at the north edge of Dayan, and it is where the classic postcard photo of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in still water is taken. The Wufeng Tower and Deyue Pavilion stand on the lakeside. Entry is around 50 to 80 CNY depending on the season, and it opens from about 7:00 to 19:00. Go early on a clear morning in the dry season for the mirror-calm reflection, and bring your own water because stalls inside are limited.

Dongba Culture Museum

This museum, set in the Heilongtan park, explains the Dongba religion of the Naxi people and its pictographic script, one of the few pictographic writing systems still in use. Exhibits cover Dongba rituals, costumes, and manuscripts, and English labels are patchy but present. Entry is often included with the Black Dragon Pool ticket. Budget 45 to 60 minutes, and check opening hours locally since they have varied between 8:30 and 17:00.

Things to Do in Lijiang: Mountains and Nature

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan)

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a 5,596 m massif about 25 km north of the old town, and its 13 peaks stay snow-capped all year. Entry to the scenic area is 100 CNY in peak season, and you then pay separately for a cable car. The Glacier Park cable car (Dasuodao) runs to 4,506 m for 120 CNY round trip, the Spruce Meadow cable car is about 55 CNY, and the Yak Meadow car about 60 CNY. At 4,506 m the air is thin, so ascend slowly and stop if you feel dizzy; read the altitude section of our Lijiang travel tips guide before you go. The show “Impression Lijiang”, staged at the mountain base, costs about 190 CNY for a standard seat.

Blue Moon Valley (Lan Yue Gu)

Blue Moon Valley is a chain of milky-blue lakes at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, colored by glacial minerals. It is included in the Jade Dragon entrance ticket, and a shuttle bus links the lakes to the cable car stations. The boardwalks wind past White Water Terrace and several cascade viewpoints. Allow one to two hours, and note the valley sits above 2,900 m, so pace yourself on the stairs.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia)

Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest river canyons in the world, where the Jinsha River squeezes between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. The classic two-day high trail starts near Qiaotou, about 60 km from Lijiang, and ends at Tina’s Guesthouse; the shorter option is to walk the paved Upper Gorge path to the roaring Tiger Leaping Stone. Upper Gorge entry is about 65 CNY, and buses from Lijiang take two to three hours. Check the Lijiang weather by month forecast before committing, and do not attempt the high trail during heavy summer rain because of landslide risk. A day trip is possible but tight, and many travelers combine it with an overnight stay.

Lashi Lake (Lashihai)

Lashi Lake is a highland wetland about 10 km west of the old town and a wintering ground for migratory birds from November to February, the dry stretch described in our best time to visit Lijiang guide. Boat trips across the lake cost roughly 50 to 100 CNY depending on the operator and season, and some packages bundle a Naxi horse ride through the surrounding villages. Bird numbers peak in mid-winter, and the best viewing is early morning. Arrange transport through a licensed operator rather than touts near the bus station.

Things to Do in Lijiang: Day Trips and Villages

Shuhe Old Town

Shuhe is the quieter, smaller sister of Dayan, about 8 km north, and it is also part of the Lijiang UNESCO listing. Its lanes are wider and calmer, with leather workshops and tea houses around the central square. A small maintenance fee is sometimes requested but usually waived, and bus 6 or a 15-minute taxi connects it to Dayan. Budget an afternoon, and consider it for a more relaxed overnight base; several hotels are covered in our where to stay in Lijiang guide.

Baisha Village

Baisha is the oldest of the three towns and the original home of the Mu rulers. Its main draw is the set of Baisha murals painted between the 14th and 17th centuries in the Dabaoji Palace, with entry around 30 CNY. The village is small, traditional, and far less commercial than Dayan, so it gives the clearest sense of rural Naxi life. Bus 6 reaches it from the old town in about 30 minutes, and you can combine it with a stop at Shuhe on the way back.
