La Rochelle’s events calendar is anchored by Les Francofolies, one of France’s biggest music festivals, but the city also hosts an international film festival, a major boat show, and one of the country’s most popular marathons. Most events cluster between June and September, with a few notable exceptions in autumn and winter.
Music and Performance Festivals in La Rochelle
Les Francofolies (mid-July, 5 days)
France’s premier French-language music festival, founded in 1985, attracts over 150,000 attendees across 5 days in the second week of July (typically Wednesday to Sunday). The lineup spans pop, rock, hip-hop, electro, and chanson française — recent headliners have included Orelsan, Angèle, and -M-. Venues range from the open-air Jean-Louis Foulquier stage (capacity 15,000) on the Esplanade Saint-Jean d’Acre to smaller indoor venues across the city centre. Day tickets cost 45-55 EUR, full 5-day passes 140-170 EUR. The festival also runs free daytime concerts (Francofffonies) at various squares. Book accommodation by March at the latest — every hotel room within city limits fills up. The Old Port transforms into a pedestrian-only festival zone with food stalls and bars open until 2:00.
La Rochelle Jazz Festival (early to mid-October, 2 weeks)
A two-week jazz festival held across multiple venues including La Coursive theatre, the Casino Barrière, and intimate jazz clubs. The programming mixes international headliners with up-and-coming French jazz artists. Single concert tickets range from 15-40 EUR. The festival celebrated its 25th edition in 2022 and has become a fixture on France’s autumn jazz circuit. Most concerts start at 20:30. Fête de la Musique (21 June)
The nationwide free music celebration fills every square, bar, and street corner in La Rochelle with live performances from amateur and professional musicians. The Vieux Port area is the epicentre, with stages appearing on the Quai Duperré, Place de la Chaîne, and Cours des Dames. Genres range from rock covers to classical ensembles to Breton folk. Free, runs from late afternoon until around midnight. A great night to bar-hop and discover local talent.
Film and Cultural Events in La Rochelle
Festival International du Film de La Rochelle (late June to early July, 10 days)
An international film festival screening 250+ films — a mix of new releases, retrospectives, and rarely screened works from global cinema. The festival is known for its curated tributes to directors and actors (past honorees include Wim Wenders and Isabelle Huppert). Screenings take place at La Coursive, the Megarama multiplex, and the Grand Théâtre. Individual tickets cost 8 EUR; a 10-screening pass is 55 EUR. Les Nuits en Mer (late June to August, selected evenings)
A summer series of open-air concerts and DJ sets held on the Plage de la Concurrence at the foot of the medieval towers. The setting is the main draw — music plays as the sun sets behind the Tour de la Lanterne. Free entry, bar on site. Check the city tourism website for the schedule.
Maritime and Sporting Events in La Rochelle
Grand Pavois (late September, 5-6 days)
One of Europe’s largest in-water boat shows, held at the Port des Minimes marina. Over 700 boats are on display, 300 of them in the water and available for sea trials. The show attracts 100,000 visitors — a mix of industry professionals, serious sailors, and curious day-trippers. Day tickets cost 14 EUR online or 16 EUR at the gate. The marina is a 10-minute bus ride from the city centre (special shuttle buses run during the show) or a 30-minute walk. Restaurants around Les Minimes are packed during show days; eat in the city centre instead.
Marathon de La Rochelle (late November, Sunday)
France’s second-most-popular marathon after Paris, with 10,000+ participants running a flat, fast course that starts and finishes at the Vieux Port and passes through the city’s parks, the Les Minimes waterfront, and along the Atlantic coast. Registration opens in March at marathon-larochelle.fr and typically sells out by October. Entry fee is 75 EUR. The race village opens the Friday before at the Espace Encan. Even if you’re not running, the finish-line atmosphere on the Quai Maubec is worth experiencing — crowds line the final 500 metres cheering finishers home.
Seasonal Events in La Rochelle
La Rochelle Christmas Market (late November to late December)
About 50 wooden chalets set up on the Place du Commandant de la Motte Rouge (between the Vieux Port and the train station) selling crafts, regional food products, mulled wine (vin chaud, 3-4 EUR), and Christmas gifts. An ice rink (patinoire) is installed nearby — entry costs 5 EUR including skate rental. The market opens daily from 11:00 to 20:00, until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The nearby streets are decorated with lights, and the Ferris wheel on the Esplanade offers a bird’s-eye view of the illuminated Old Port (6 EUR per ride).
Les Soldes d’Hiver (January, 4 weeks)
France’s nationwide winter sales start the second Wednesday of January and run for four weeks. La Rochelle’s concentration of boutiques in the arcaded streets (Rue du Palais, Rue Chaudrier, and Rue des Merciers) makes it a solid shopping destination. Discounts start at 30% and increase to 50-70% by the final week. Combine with off-season hotel rates for a budget-friendly winter city break.
