Events and Festivals in Pesaro

Italy Marche Pesaro

Pesaro’s event calendar is anchored by the Rossini Opera Festival in August, but the city’s 2024 Italian Capital of Culture designation has expanded programming across the entire year. From classical music to vintage motorcycles, here is what to plan around.

Events and Festivals in Pesaro: Rossini Opera Festival

The Rossini Opera Festival (ROF) has run every August since 1980, staging rarely-performed Rossini operas with international casts and directors. The 2025 edition (the 46th) runs August 10-22. Performances are held at the Teatro Rossini (Piazza Lazzarini) and the Vitrifrigo Arena. The 2025 program includes ‘Zelmira,’ a dramatic Rossini rarity conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti. Tickets range from 30 EUR for gallery seats to 150 EUR for prime stalls. Book through Vivaticket online at rossinioperafestival.it. Even if you do not attend an opera, the festival atmosphere transforms Pesaro with street performances, open-air screenings, and pop-up bars along the centro storico.

Events and Festivals in Pesaro: Spring Events

Pesaro Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2024

Running throughout 2024 and extending into 2025 with legacy programming, Pesaro’s Capital of Culture year features rotating exhibitions at Palazzo Mosca, site-specific installations across the city, and a packed calendar of concerts and talks. The flagship exhibition space is the newly restored Ex-Chiesa della Maddalena (Via Maddalena). Most events are free or under 10 EUR. Check the program at pesaro2024.it.

Fiera di San Giuseppe (March 19)

Pesaro’s traditional spring fair fills the streets around Piazza del Popolo with market stalls, food vendors, and fairground rides for three days around March 19. It is primarily a local event rather than a tourist draw, but the street food (porchetta sandwiches, olive ascolane) and carnival atmosphere make it worth stopping by if you are in town.

Events and Festivals in Pesaro: Summer Events

Adriatico Mediterraneo Festival

This multicultural festival runs from late August to early September (dates shift annually) and features world music concerts, dance performances, and art exhibitions with artists from across the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions. Venues include the courtyard of Palazzo Ducale and the Rocca Costanza. Most concerts are free. It was founded in 1997 and has become Pesaro’s second-largest cultural event after the ROF.

Notte Bianca (White Night)

Pesaro’s annual White Night takes place on a Saturday in late July or early August (date varies). Shops, museums, and galleries stay open until 2:00 AM with free entry, live music stages are set up along the beachfront, and restaurants offer fixed-price menus. The 2024 edition drew an estimated 80,000 visitors. The city center is closed to traffic from 18:00 onward so plan to walk or use the free shuttle buses from parking areas on the outskirts.

Events and Festivals in Pesaro: Autumn and Winter

Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema

Pesaro’s international film festival has run since 1965, making it one of Italy’s longest-running cinema events. Held over 8 days in late June, it focuses on new directors, experimental film, and retrospectives. Screenings take place at the Teatro Sperimentale (Via Rossini) and outdoor venues in summer. Tickets are 7 EUR per screening or 30 EUR for a festival pass.

Festa del Mare (September)

The Sea Festival takes place on the first weekend of September and celebrates Pesaro’s fishing heritage. The harbor becomes a festival ground with seafood stalls, boat parades, and the Palio della Vela (sailing regatta). The highlight is the ‘sagra del pesce’ where local fishermen grill the day’s catch and sell plates for 8-12 EUR. Arrive early (by 19:00) as food sells out quickly.

Christmas Markets (December)

From early December through January 6, Piazza del Popolo hosts a Christmas market with wooden chalets selling crafts, decorations, and seasonal food. An ice skating rink is set up in Piazzale della LibertΓ  from mid-December. The market operates daily 10:00-20:00 (until 22:00 on weekends). Entry is free, skate rental costs 5 EUR.
