Grenoble Travel Tips: Arrival and Getting Around
Nearest Airports
Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB) is 40km northwest of the city near Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs. It is a small airport handling mostly winter ski charters (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air from UK and European cities). A shuttle bus (Ben’s Bus or Actibus) connects to Grenoble bus station in 45 minutes for 15-20 EUR one-way. Taxis from GNB cost 90-120 EUR fixed rate. Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS) is 100km away (1 hour by car or direct FlixBus/TGV) and is the better option for year-round scheduled flights, served by Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and easyJet. The TGV from Lyon-Saint Exupéry station to Grenoble takes 50 minutes and costs from 25 EUR booked in advance on SNCF Connect. Train Connections
Gare de Grenoble (1 Place de la Gare) is on the TGV network with direct high-speed trains to Paris Gare de Lyon (3 hours, from 35 EUR booked 3 months ahead on SNCF Connect). Regional TER trains connect to Lyon Part-Dieu (1h20, around 20 EUR), Geneva (2 hours), Chambéry (40 minutes), and Annecy (1h45). Public Transport (TAG)
Grenoble’s public transport system (TAG) runs 5 tram lines (A through E) and 40+ bus routes. A single ticket costs 1.70 EUR (valid 1 hour including transfers). A 10-trip carnet is 13.70 EUR. A day pass (24h) is 5.50 EUR, and a 3-day pass is 11 EUR. Buy tickets at tram stop machines (English available, coins and cards accepted), at the TAG boutique at 49 Avenue Alsace-Lorraine, or via the TAG mobile app. Validate your ticket on board trams (green machines at doors) or show to the bus driver. Is tap water safe to drink?
Yes, Grenoble tap water is safe and high-quality, sourced from alpine springs in the Chartreuse and Vercors. Restaurants serve tap water free on request (ask for “une carafe d’eau”).
Tipping
Service is included in French restaurant bills (service compris, 15% by law). Leaving a small tip (5-10% rounded up, or 1-2 EUR per person for a coffee or simple meal) is appreciated for good service but not expected. Round up taxi fares to the nearest euro. Tip hotel porters 1-2 EUR per bag.

Rental cars from Europcar and Sixt at the train station start around 40 EUR/day.
