The Cascais events calendar ranges from a major international jazz festival to traditional Portuguese sea festivals and a spectacular light art festival. Most major events happen between June and September, but the town stays active through the winter with Christmas markets and cultural programming. Cascais Events and Festivals: Ageas Cooljazz (July)
The Ageas Cooljazz festival runs throughout July at two open-air venues: the Hipodromo Manuel Possolo (a former horse-racing track turned event space) and the Marechal Carmona Park in the town center. The lineup spans jazz, soul, funk, and world music, with past acts including Jamie Cullum, Norah Jones, and Jorge Drexler. Concerts start at 9pm and the park setting, with picnics on the grass under summer night skies, is a major draw. Tickets range from 30 to 70 euros depending on the artist, available through the festival website and Blueticket.pt. Cascais Events and Festivals: Festas do Mar (August)
The Festas do Mar (Sea Festival) is Cascais’s biggest traditional event, held over two long weekends in late August. For 2026 the dates are August 20-23 and 27-30. The festival fills Cascais Bay (Baia de Cascais), the Jardim Visconde da Luz, and the Citadel area with free outdoor concerts, artisan craft stalls, Portuguese food and wine vendors, carnival rides, and nightly fireworks displays over the bay. Musical acts cover Portuguese pop, fado, rock, and international tribute bands. Entry to the entire festival is free. The bay area gets very crowded from 8pm onward, and finding dinner reservations anywhere in central Cascais during the festival weekends requires booking at least a week ahead. Cascais Events and Festivals: Lumina Festival of Light (Autumn)
Lumina transforms the streets, buildings, and parks of Cascais into an outdoor gallery of light art installations, 3D projection mapping, and interactive illuminated sculptures. The festival runs on select evenings over several weeks in autumn; 2026 dates are typically in October or November (check visitcascais.com closer to the date). The route winds through the historic center, the Citadel, Marechal Carmona Park, and the waterfront. The installations are created by Portuguese and international light artists. Entry is free and the event is family-friendly. The light displays work best after sunset (roughly 6pm in October/November). Cascais Events and Festivals: Christmas Season (December)
From late November through early January, Cascais decks out the town center and Marechal Carmona Park with Christmas lights and a holiday village. The park hosts an ice skating rink, a carousel, Santa’s house, and food stalls selling roasted chestnuts, churros, and mulled wine (vinho quente). The Christmas market stalls in the town center sell crafts, decorations, and regional food products. A large Christmas tree and nativity scene are installed in the Praca 5 de Outubro in front of the town hall. Entry to the park and market is free; the ice rink and carousel charge small fees (around 3-5 euros). The Christmas Eve and New Year fireworks over Cascais Bay draw big local crowds. Cascais Events and Festivals: Other Annual Events
- Carnival (February/March, date varies): Cascais holds a smaller but spirited Carnival parade through the center, with floats, samba groups, and costumed locals. Less intense than the big parades in Torres Vedras or Loule, but fun for families. Free.
- Semana Santa (Holy Week, March/April): Religious processions in the town center on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao is the focal point.
- Santos Populares (June 12-13): Lisbon’s St. Anthony festivities extend to Cascais, with grilled sardines in the streets, makeshift altars, and neighborhood parties. The historic center fills with the smell of sardines and basil plants.
- International Sailing Regattas (Summer): Cascais Marina hosts several regattas during the summer, including legs of the Portugal Match Cup and Laser class events. Check the Clube Naval de Cascais website for schedules.
- Feira de Artesanato do Estoril (July and August): The Estoril Craft Fair sets up in the Jardim do Estoril with stalls selling Portuguese ceramics, cork products, jewelry, and textiles. Open evenings from 5pm to midnight. Free entry.
