Ajaccio Neighborhoods: Vieille Ville (Old Town)
The old town is the historic core, bounded by the port to the south, Place de Gaulle to the east, and Cours Napoleon to the north. Its narrow streets, some barely 2 meters wide, date from the Genoese period (15th-18th centuries). Rue Saint-Charles runs through the center with Maison Bonaparte and the cathedral. Rue du Cardinal Fesch and Rue Bonaparte are the main shopping streets, lined with boutiques selling Corsican products. The area is almost entirely pedestrianized, so you’ll walk everywhere. You can reach it in 25 minutes by car via the D55 road around the gulf, or in 15 minutes by the regular boat shuttle (Navette Maritime Porticcio) from Ajaccio port (7 euros one-way, runs April-October, every 30 minutes in summer). Porticcio has a long, sandy beach (Plage de Porticcio) with calm, shallow water suitable for families.
