Amritsar Weather by Month

India › Punjab › Amritsar

Amritsar sits in northwestern India at 234 metres (768 ft) above sea level near the Pakistan border. The city has a semi-arid climate with three distinct seasons: a short, cool winter (December to February), a long, blistering hot summer (March to June), and a humid monsoon season (July to September). Annual rainfall averages 786 mm (31 inches), almost all of it concentrated in the monsoon months. Day-night temperature swings can exceed 15°C (27°F), so pack layers even in warmer months. Amritsar Winter: December to February

Winter brings the most comfortable weather of the year. December and January daytime highs reach 19-21°C (66-70°F), but nights drop to 4-5°C (39-41°F). Early mornings often bring dense fog that can delay trains and flights at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ). By midday the fog burns off and skies are clear. January averages only 2 rain days with 25 mm of precipitation. This is the peak tourist season, especially around the Lohri festival (January 13) and Republic Day (January 26). Bring a warm jacket, scarf, and closed shoes for early morning Golden Temple visits when marble floors are cold. For more, see our Amritsar events and festivals.

Amritsar Summer: March to June

Summer arrives fast. March starts pleasant at 28°C (82°F) but by April daily highs hit 36°C (97°F). May and June are brutally hot with average highs of 40°C (104°F) and peak days reaching 45°C (113°F). Humidity is low (25-35%) so the heat is dry rather than sticky, but it’s still dangerous for outdoor sightseeing between 11:00 and 16:00. The Golden Temple’s sarovar (sacred pool) and the marble floors under the shaded parikrama (walkway) offer some relief. Hotels drop to their lowest rates in May and June except during Baisakhi (April 13-14). Pack light cotton clothing, sunscreen (SPF 50+), a wide-brimmed hat, and a reusable water bottle. Most restaurants and shops run air conditioning. For more, see our things to do in Amritsar.

Amritsar Monsoon: July to September

The southwest monsoon arrives in early July and lasts through mid-September. July is the wettest month with 200 mm (7.9 inches) of rain spread across 11 rainy days. August brings another 185 mm (7.3 inches). Rain typically comes in short, intense afternoon downpours lasting 1-2 hours rather than all-day drizzle. Temperatures drop to 34-35°C (93-95°F) during the day but humidity spikes to 75-80%, making it feel muggy. The Golden Temple complex looks spectacular in the rain with reflections on wet marble, but the narrow lanes of the old city flood quickly. Bring a compact umbrella, waterproof footwear, and mosquito repellent. August sees the fewest tourists, so you’ll have shorter queues at the langar hall and the Central Sikh Museum. Amritsar Post-Monsoon: October to November

October and November are the sweet spot. October highs settle at 32°C (90°F) with clear skies and low humidity. November cools to 27°C (81°F) during the day and 10°C (50°F) at night. Rainfall drops to 5-15 mm per month , essentially dry. This is the most pleasant window for sightseeing, with Diwali (October/November) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November) drawing large crowds. Book hotels 4-6 weeks ahead for November. The weather is warm enough for short sleeves during the day but bring a light jacket for evenings. For more, see our Amritsar travel guide.
