Livorno Weather by Month

Italy Tuscany Livorno

Livorno has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The city’s position on the Ligurian Sea moderates temperatures year-round, keeping summers from getting as scorching as inland Tuscany and winters from dropping too low. Sea breezes provide natural air conditioning during July and August, though humidity can make 30°C (86°F) feel heavier near the port. The wettest months are October and November, when Atlantic fronts sweep across the Tyrrhenian Sea and dump most of the annual 800mm (31 inches) of rainfall. See our Livorno travel tips for more details.

January and February

The coldest months in Livorno see daytime highs of 12-13°C (54-55°F) and overnight lows around 4-5°C (39-41°F). Rainfall averages 60-70mm each month, typically falling across 8-10 days as light, persistent drizzle rather than heavy downpours. The sea drops to 13-14°C (55-57°F), too cold for swimming. With only 4-5 hours of daily sunshine, these are the quietest months for tourism. Hotel rates hit their annual low and you will have the Terrazza Mascagni and Venice district almost entirely to yourself.

March and April

March warms to 15°C (59°F) with 6 hours of sun, but rain persists at 65mm. By April, temperatures reach 18°C (64°F) and sunshine jumps to 7 hours daily. Rain eases slightly to 60mm. The sea begins warming from 14°C to 15°C (57-59°F), still chilly for swimming but pleasant for boat trips along the coast. These months are excellent for exploring outdoor attractions without summer crowds. See our best neighborhoods in Livorno for more details.

May and June

May delivers 22°C (72°F) highs and 9 hours of sun with just 50mm of rain. June brings 26°C (79°F) and 10 hours of sunshine, the driest month at 35mm. Sea temperatures climb from 18°C to 21°C (64-70°F), and by mid-June the water is warm enough for comfortable swimming. These months offer the best overall conditions: warm and sunny without the July/August intensity, lower tourist numbers, and outdoor restaurant terraces throughout the Venice district open for the season. See our things to do in Livorno for more details.

July and August

July and August share identical averages: 29°C (84°F) highs, 19°C (66°F) lows. July is the driest month at just 20mm of rain, while August sees a slight increase to 35mm, often from brief afternoon thunderstorms. The sea reaches its warmest at 24-25°C (75-77°F), perfect for swimming at Bagni Lido. Humidity peaks during these months and the city fills with cruise passengers and Italian holidaymakers. Book restaurants in advance, especially for Friday and Saturday dinner. See our where to stay in Livorno for more details.

September

September keeps things warm at 25°C (77°F) with 8 hours of sun, but rainfall jumps to 75mm as autumn fronts arrive. The sea stays at 23°C (73°F), warm enough for swimming through the first three weeks. The first half of September still feels like summer. By the third week, temperatures start sliding and rain becomes more frequent. See our Livorno events calendar for more details.

October and November

October brings 21°C (70°F) highs but rainfall surges to 115mm, making it the second-wettest month. November is the wettest at 120mm with highs dropping to 16°C (61°F). Expect rain on 12-14 days each month. The sea cools from 20°C to 17°C (68-63°F). These months are best for indoor activities: the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori, Mercato Centrale food hall, and cozy seafood trattorias. Pack a raincoat and waterproof shoes.

December

December brings 13°C (55°F) highs, 5°C (41°F) lows, and 90mm of rain over roughly 10 days. Snow is extremely rare, Livorno last saw measurable snowfall in 1985. The sea sits at 15°C (59°F). With only 4 hours of daily sun, daylight is short. Christmas markets appear in Piazza della Repubblica and along Via Grande in early December.
