Holbox Neighborhoods Guide

Mexico Quintana Roo Holbox

Holbox is a small island, but its layout divides into distinct areas that differ in atmosphere, convenience, and price. The entire island is 42km long but only 1.5km wide at its widest point, and the developed area spans roughly 3km from the ferry terminal in the west to the beginning of the protected zone near Punta Cocos in the east. Most visitors stay within this 3km stretch. There is no public transport on Holbox (the island has no paved roads and no cars except service vehicles), so your choice of area determines whether you are walking 2 minutes or 25 minutes to restaurants and the main square. For a full overview, see our Holbox travel guide.

Holbox Neighborhoods: Town Center

The town center is the 4-block radius around Parque Central, bounded by Avenida Tiburon Ballena to the north, Calle Jeronimo de Aguilar to the south, and extending about 3 blocks east and west. This is where you will find the ferry terminal, the main square, the church, the whale shark pier, the island’s 4 ATMs (Banorte, HSBC, Banco Azteca, and Santander, all on or near the square), the largest grocery store (Super Cocos on Calle Palomino), and 80% of Holbox’s restaurants and bars. Accommodation in the town center ranges from MXN 600/night (US$30) hostels to MXN 3,000/night (US$150) boutique hotels like Casa Las Tortugas. The trade-off is noise: the town center has golf cart traffic, music from bars until midnight, and the 6:00 AM ferry horn. Best for travelers who want to walk to everything and do not mind urban bustle. The beach in front of town center is the narrowest and busiest section of the island’s shoreline, but it is also the closest to food and drink. Check our Holbox weather by month for more details. Holbox Neighborhoods: Hotel Zone (West Beach)

West of the town center along the beach toward Punta Baja, a 1.5km stretch often called the Hotel Zone has Holbox’s upscale properties and widest beaches. This area starts roughly at Calle Chacchi and extends to the island’s western tip. Hotels here include Las Nubes de Holbox (the island’s most luxurious property, MXN 5,000-8,000/night, US$250-400), Villas HM Palapas del Mar, and Mystique Holbox by Royalton. The beach in this zone is 30-50m wide compared to the 10-15m town beach, and the water is typically clearer since it is further from the ferry churn. Restaurants are sparse west of Calle Chacchi (mostly within the hotels themselves), so you will walk 15-20 minutes to town for meals unless staying at a property with a restaurant. Best for couples and travelers seeking quiet, spacious beachfront without the town center noise. Check our best time to visit Holbox for more details.

Holbox Neighborhoods: East Beach (Punta Cocos Area)

East of town toward Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito, the beachfront becomes less developed and more natural. This 2km stretch starts past Calle Zargo and runs to the edge of the Yum Balam protected zone. Hotels here include Villas Flamingos (mid-range, MXN 2,000-3,500/night, US$100-175), Villas Tiburon, and a handful of smaller guesthouses. The beach is wide (40-60m) with fewer people, and you are closer to the flamingo viewing at Punta Mosquito and the kiteboarding launch zone in front of Villas Flamingos. The walk to the town center takes 15-25 minutes along the beach or Calle Tiburon Ballena (the main sand road). This area loses electricity more frequently than the town center during summer storms, and WiFi is patchy past Villas Flamingos. Best for kiteboarders, birdwatchers, and travelers who prioritize space and quiet over restaurant proximity. No street lighting past Villas Flamingos, so bring a headlamp for evening walks. Holbox Neighborhoods: Inland (South of Avenida Principal)

The area south of the main east-west sand track (Calle Tiburon Ballena/Avenida Principal) is Holbox’s residential and local neighborhood. It extends to the mangrove-lined lagoon on the island’s south side. This area has no beach access but offers the lowest accommodation prices, with guesthouses and Airbnbs starting at MXN 400-600/night (US$20-30). You will be surrounded by local homes, corner stores (tiendas de abarrotes), and small family-run food stalls rather than tourist restaurants. The walk to the beach is 5-10 minutes north along sandy streets. The lagoon side has several inexpensive dockside restaurants popular with locals for fresh seafood at half the beachfront prices. Best for budget travelers, long-term stays, and anyone who wants to experience Holbox beyond the tourist strip. Mosquitoes are worse on the lagoon side, especially May-November, so bring a net if your accommodation does not provide one. Check our Holbox events and festivals for more details.
