Holbox runs on a quieter calendar than mainland Mexican destinations. The island does not have the large music festivals or cultural parades of Cancun or Playa del Carmen, but its events reflect the rhythms of a fishing community: wildlife seasons, local patron saint celebrations, and a growing street art festival. Most events centre on the main square (Parque Central) or the beach in front of the ferry terminal. Confirm exact dates with the Holbox Tourism Office (Calle Tiburon Ballena at Calle Palomino, open Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-4:00 PM) as they can shift year to year. For a full overview, see our Holbox travel guide.
Holbox Events: Whale Shark Festival
The Whale Shark Festival (Festival del Tiburon Ballena) is Holbox’s signature annual event, held over a weekend in mid-July to coincide with the peak of whale shark season. The festival combines conservation education with community celebration. Expect sand sculpture competitions on the main beach, children’s art workshops focused on marine wildlife at the community centre (Calle Jeronimo de Aguilar), and evening concerts on the main square with regional bands playing cumbia and salsa. Local restaurants including Raices and Las Panchas set up seafood stalls along Avenida Tiburon Ballena. The festival has no fixed dates, typically falling on the second or third weekend of July. Accommodation books out 4-6 weeks ahead, and ferry services from Chiquila add extra departures to handle the increased traffic. Entry to all events is free. Check our Holbox weather by month for more details.
Holbox Events: International Street Art Festival
Each November (usually the second week), Holbox hosts the Festival Internacional de Arte Urbano, bringing 15-20 muralists from Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and the US to paint new large-scale works across the town. Over 5 days, artists work on designated walls while visitors can watch the murals take shape. The festival includes guided walking tours each evening at 6:00 PM (MXN 200/person) with commentary from the artists, plus a closing-night auction of smaller canvas works at the Holbox Community Centre. Proceeds fund local school art programs. The festival has run annually since 2017. Check the Holbox Mural Festival Instagram account (@holboxmuralfest) for exact dates and participating artists each year. Check our Holbox neighborhoods guide for more details.
Holbox Events: International Fishing Tournament
The Torneo Internacional de Pesca Deportiva Holbox runs over a weekend in October (dates vary, typically the third weekend). It draws 100-120 boats competing for prizes in catch-and-release categories for tarpon, snook, and barracuda. Weigh-ins happen at the fishing cooperative pier on Avenida Tiburon Ballena at 3:00 PM each day, with spectators welcome. The tournament has run for over 15 years and is organized by the Holbox Fishing Cooperative. Registration costs MXN 3,000 (US$150) per boat for the weekend. Evening events include a seafood cook-off and a prize ceremony with live music on the main square. The tournament is more of a local and regional event than an international tourist draw, but it brings a lively atmosphere to the island during an otherwise quiet month. Holbox Events: Religious and Traditional Celebrations
Holy Week (Semana Santa, dates vary in March or April) transforms Holbox into a packed beach destination as Mexican families arrive for the holiday. The island’s population swells from 2,000 to an estimated 8,000-10,000 during Easter week. The Catholic church (Iglesia de San Jose, on the main square) holds daily services, and on Good Friday there is a candlelit procession along the beachfront at 8:00 PM. Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos, November 1-2) is observed with an altar competition on the main square where local families build ofrendas (offerings to deceased relatives) decorated with marigolds, candles, and photographs. The island’s patron saint festival for San Jose (Saint Joseph) takes place on March 19 with a morning mass, a small parade with a statue of the saint carried through town, and evening dancing on the square. Christmas Eve (Nochebuena, December 24) brings fireworks launched from the beach at midnight. Check our where to stay in Holbox for more details.
Holbox Events: Seasonal Wildlife Events
While not organized festivals, several wildlife phenomena draw visitors to specific periods. The whale shark aggregation (mid-May to mid-September) is the island’s primary seasonal event, with tour operators running daily departures. Sea turtle nesting (May-September) brings green and loggerhead turtles to the eastern beaches, and the Holbox Turtle Conservation Program runs night patrols where volunteers can sometimes join (contact the program via the Holbox Dive Center). The peak flamingo season (April-October) at Punta Mosquito coincides with the dry-to-wet season transition. Bioluminescent plankton viewing peaks during new moon phases June through October, with several operators running dedicated dark-sky kayak tours. None of these have fixed dates, so check with tour operators on arrival for current conditions. Check our best time to visit Holbox for more details.
