Best Time to Visit Assisi: Weather, Crowds & Festivals Guide

Italy Umbria Assisi

Assisi draws two types of visitors: pilgrims who come for the religious significance of St. Francis and St. Clare, and tourists who come for the UNESCO-listed medieval architecture and Umbrian countryside. The best time to visit depends on which experience you want. Mid-spring (late April to early May) and early autumn (mid-September to mid-October) offer the best balance of comfortable weather and manageable crowds. Here is a breakdown by season and interest. For a complete overview, see our Assisi travel guide.

Best Time to Visit Assisi for Good Weather

Late May through June and September deliver the most pleasant weather: daytime highs of 22-26ยฐC (72-79ยฐF), low humidity, and 6-9 hours of daily sunshine. Rain is moderate at 52-72mm per month. July and August are hotter at 29-30ยฐC (84-86ยฐF) and can feel oppressive on the stone streets during midday, though mornings and evenings are pleasant. If you are hiking Mount Subasio, avoid the midday summer heat and start early. April and October are cooler at 16-19ยฐC (61-66ยฐF) with more rain (72-95mm) but still perfectly workable for sightseeing. For more information, see our Assisi weather by month.

Best Time to Visit Assisi for Fewer Crowds

Assisi is busiest during Easter week, the Calendimaggio festival (first week of May), the Feast of St. Francis (October 3-4), and the Feast of the Pardon (August 1-2). July and August see heavy tourist traffic throughout. The quietest months are November, January, and February, when you can walk through the Basilica of St. Francis almost alone. Weekdays are always quieter than weekends, and early mornings (before 10:00) are the best time to experience the basilicas without crowds year-round. If you visit in November or January, some smaller restaurants and shops may close for seasonal breaks. For more information, see our things to do in Assisi.

Best Time to Visit Assisi for Lower Prices

Hotel rates in Assisi drop by 30-50 percent from November through March (excluding Christmas and Easter weeks). A three-star hotel room that costs EUR 120 per night in August can be found for EUR 60-70 in January. Airfares to Perugia Airport (PEG) and Rome Fiumicino (FCO) are also lowest in these months. November and February are the cheapest months overall. If you are on a budget, mid-January to late February offers the best value, with the caveat that some smaller attractions may have reduced hours. For more information, see our Assisi events and festivals.

Best Time to Visit Assisi for Festivals

The Calendimaggio festival (first Thursday to Saturday of May) transforms the town into a medieval pageant with costumed parades, flag-throwing, crossbow contests, and torchlit processions. It is Assisi’s most spectacular secular event. The Feast of St. Francis (October 3-4) brings thousands of pilgrims and a solemn atmosphere. The Feast of the Pardon (August 1-2) offers the chance to receive the Portiuncula Indulgence at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Good Friday and Easter Sunday processions are deeply moving if you are visiting for religious reasons. The March for Peace from Perugia to Assisi takes place every two years in October (next: 2027). For more information, see our Assisi neighborhoods guide.

Months to Avoid

November is the rainiest month (102mm over 9 days) with short daylight hours and many grey days. The stone streets can be slippery and the fog from the valley can obscure the famous views. August is crowded, hot, and expensive, though the Feast of the Pardon makes it worthwhile if you are a pilgrim. July can be uncomfortably hot for walking the steep streets. If you dislike crowds, avoid Easter week entirely: the basilicas are packed and hotel prices triple. For more information, see our where to stay in Assisi. For details, see our Assisi travel tips.
