Salerno’s event calendar is anchored by two major draws: the Luci d’Artista light festival that illuminates the city for two months each winter, and the Feast of Saint Matthew in September, which fills the streets with processions and fireworks. Between these, the city hosts jazz concerts, a literature festival, and traditional religious observances. Here is what is on and when, with exact dates where possible.
Salerno Events & Festivals: Luci d’Artista (November to January)
Luci d’Artista (Artist’s Lights) is Salerno’s signature event, running from late November through late January. The city installs elaborate light sculptures and themed illuminated displays across the Villa Comunale gardens, the Lungomare Trieste, and the historic centre’s streets. Each year has a different theme, with past editions featuring fairy tales, the natural world, and Italian landmarks. The Villa Comunale becomes a paid-entry illuminated garden (about 5 EUR) while the Lungomare and street installations remain free. The lights switch on at dusk, typically around 17:30 in December and 18:30 in January. The 2025-2026 edition runs from November 28, 2025 through January 25, 2026. Expect large crowds on weekends and throughout the Christmas-New Year period. Parking near the centre becomes difficult after 18:00; use the Parcheggio Piazza della Concordia and walk 10 minutes.
Salerno Events & Festivals: Feast of Saint Matthew (September 21)
The Festa di San Matteo on September 21 is Salerno’s most important religious and civic celebration. A silver statue of Saint Matthew, kept in the cathedral crypt year-round, is carried through the streets of the historic centre in a procession that begins at 10:00 from the Duomo and follows Via dei Mercanti to Piazza Portanova and back. The procession involves the archbishop, city officials, and representatives of Salerno’s historic confraternities. In the evening, fireworks are launched from the Molo Manfredi pier over the Gulf of Salerno, typically starting around 21:30. The day is a public holiday in Salerno, and most shops and businesses close. The best viewing spots for the fireworks are the Lungomare Trieste and Santa Teresa beach.
Salerno Events & Festivals: Easter Week (March or April)
Easter in Salerno is marked by processions organized by the city’s historic confraternities. On Good Friday, a silent procession carries a statue of the dead Christ from the Church of San Pietro a Corte through the historic centre, winding through the narrow alleys lit only by candles and torches. The procession starts around 20:30 and lasts approximately two hours. On Easter Sunday, the cathedral hosts a morning Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Salerno, followed by the Scoppio del Carro, a fireworks display in Piazza Alfano I in front of the Duomo. Easter dates vary: in 2026, Easter Sunday falls on April 5. See our Salerno weather by month guide for more details. See our best time to visit Salerno guide for more details. Salerno Events & Festivals: Summer Festivals (June to August)
The Salerno Letteratura festival takes place over a week in mid-June, bringing Italian and international authors to the city for readings, panel discussions, and book signings. Events are held at the Complesso Monumentale di Santa Sofia and the Villa Comunale bandstand. Most sessions are free and conducted in Italian. The Mediterranean Jazz Festival runs on weekends throughout July at the Arena del Mare, an open-air venue set up on the Santa Teresa beach. Past performers have included Stefano Bollani, Enrico Rava, and international acts. Tickets range from 15 to 30 EUR depending on the act. See our Salerno neighborhoods guide guide for more details. Ferragosto (August 15) sees a fireworks display over the gulf around 22:30, though it is smaller than the Saint Matthew celebration.
Salerno Events & Festivals: Christmas and New Year
The Christmas market in Piazza Portanova runs from the first weekend of December through January 6 (Epiphany). Stalls sell handmade nativity figures (presepi), local crafts, roasted chestnuts, and vin brulΓ© (mulled wine). The market operates from about 10:00 to 21:00 daily, later on weekends. On New Year’s Eve, a concert takes place on the Lungomare Trieste starting around 22:00, followed by a midnight fireworks display over the gulf. The concert is free and the promenade fills to capacity by 23:00. On January 6 (Epiphany), the Befana tradition brings costumed characters distributing sweets to children in Piazza Portanova in the morning.
Salerno Events & Festivals: Other Notable Events
The Notte Bianca (White Night) typically takes place on a Saturday in late September, with shops, museums, and galleries staying open until midnight or later, and live music performances staged in piazzas across the historic centre. The date is announced about a month in advance. The Minerva Festival, held at the Giardino della Minerva on occasional weekends in spring and summer, features guided tours of the medicinal gardens, herbal remedy workshops, and local food tastings.
