Salerno is a port city of 130,000 on the Tyrrhenian Sea, sitting at the eastern gateway to the Amalfi Coast in Italy’s Campania region. It has a walkable medieval centre, a 2-kilometre seafront promenade, direct ferry connections to Amalfi and Positano (late March to October), and an 11th-century cathedral housing what the Church believes are the remains of Saint Matthew. Unlike the cliffside villages further up the coast, Salerno is flat, affordable, and connected to the rest of Italy by high-speed rail. It works as a base for Amalfi Coast day trips, a stopover on a Naples-to-Palermo journey, or a city break in its own right.
Welcome to Salerno: A Real City on the Amalfi Coast
Most visitors to the Amalfi Coast skip Salerno and head straight for Positano or Amalfi town. That is their loss. Salerno gives you something those postcard villages do not: a functioning Italian city where people live and work year-round. The Lungomare Trieste promenade is lined with palm trees and benches facing the Gulf of Salerno. The Centro Storico is a maze of medieval vicoli (alleys) where laundry hangs from balconies and the smell of pizza dough drifts from doorways. The Duomo, built in 1076 by Norman duke Robert Guiscard, has a crypt that rivals anything on the coast. And from the ferry terminal at Molo Manfredi, you can be in Amalfi in 35 minutes or Positano in 70, without paying the inflated accommodation prices those towns command.

Where is Salerno and What Shapes its Weather?
Salerno sits on the Gulf of Salerno, a wide bay on the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 50km southeast of Naples. The city faces southwest across the water, with the Lattari Mountains of the Amalfi Coast rising to the northwest and the Monti Picentini to the northeast. This geography creates a microclimate: the mountains block cold northern winds in winter, keeping temperatures milder than inland Campania (Avellino, 30km north, is typically 3-5°C cooler). The sea moderates temperatures year-round, preventing extreme heat in summer and frost in winter. Rain arrives from the west and southwest, with the mountains squeezing out moisture, which is why November is so wet. The city’s position at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast means it gets more direct sun and less coastal fog than the north-facing villages like Praiano.
