This is peak tourist season on the Amalfi Coast, and ferry queues at Molo Manfredi can exceed 30 minutes. Book hotels 2-3 months ahead and expect the highest rates of the year. Visit the Arechi Castle early in the morning to avoid midday heat.
September and October: Autumn Comfort
September is an excellent month in Salerno. Highs ease to 27°C (80°F), the sea holds at 24°C, and crowds thin considerably after the first week. You still get 8 hours of daily sun, though rainfall increases to 65mm. The Luci d’Artista light installations are set up in late September. October brings cooler weather: 22°C (72°F) highs and 100mm of rain over 9-10 days. The sea is 21°C, still swimmable early in the month. Most Amalfi Coast ferries stop by late October, leaving SITA buses as the only coastal transport. Hotel prices are at their lowest, and you will see Salerno as a working Italian city rather than a tourist hub.
