Kochi is a relatively easy Indian city to navigate, with a compact historic core and a functional public ferry system that doubles as a scenic budget cruise. Kochi Travel Tips: Cochin International Airport (COK)
Cochin International Airport (COK) is at Nedumbassery, 35 km northeast of Ernakulam. It is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport and handles both international and domestic flights. Prepaid taxis from the airport to Fort Kochi cost 1,200 to 1,500 INR and take 70 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. To Ernakulam, the fare is 800 to 1,000 INR (50 to 60 minutes). The prepaid counter is outside the arrivals hall. Uber and Ola operate from the airport but cannot enter the terminal forecourt; they pick up from the designated app-based taxi zone 300 metres from the terminal exit. The KSRTC Volvo bus (route F-33, orange air-conditioned buses) runs from the airport to Ernakulam Junction every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 21:00 for 80 INR (60 to 75 minutes). Kochi Travel Tips: Getting Around Kochi
The government ferry system is Kochi’s best transport feature. Two main routes serve tourists: the Fort Kochi to Ernakulam ferry (6 INR, 20 minutes, every 15 to 30 minutes from 05:30 to 21:30) and the Fort Kochi to Vypeen Island ferry (10 INR, 15 minutes). Both are foot-passenger and bicycle only. The ferry terminals are simple but functional with shaded waiting areas. Buy tickets at the counter; no advance booking.
Auto-rickshaws are everywhere. By law, drivers must use the meter, but in practice most refuse. Negotiate before getting in. Solo female travelers should exercise standard precautions: avoid isolated beach areas after dark, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) especially near religious sites, and use Uber rather than hailing street taxis at night.
Tap water is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled water (20 INR for 1 litre, check the seal is intact) or use a SteriPen or Lifestraw. Most hotels provide filtered drinking water. Ice in upscale restaurants is generally made from filtered water; avoid ice from street stalls.
