Courmayeur sits in Italy’s smallest and most autonomous region, Valle d’Aosta, where Italian and French are both official languages and the local cuisine blends Alpine Italian with Savoyard French traditions. Getting here involves mountain driving or flying into one of three nearby airports. Here are the practical details to plan your trip. See our weather by month for more details. Courmayeur Travel Tips: Practical Information
Language
Valle d’Aosta is officially bilingual Italian-French. In Courmayeur, Italian is the primary spoken language, but virtually everyone in tourism speaks French and most speak functional English. Restaurant menus are typically in Italian and French, with English translations common in the main tourist restaurants. Road signs throughout the region are bilingual. Learning a few Italian phrases (buongiorno, grazie, per favore, il conto per favore) goes a long way. Check our where to stay guide for more details.
Currency and Payment
Italy uses the euro. Courmayeur is cash-friendly but all hotels, restaurants, and larger shops accept credit cards (Visa and Mastercard are universally accepted, American Express less so). Always carry EUR 50-100 in cash for mountain huts (rifugi), small cafรฉs, and the weekly market. ATMs (bancomat) are located on Via Roma near Piazza Brocherel and at the Courmayeur Sport Centre. There is no currency exchange office in Courmayeur; use the ATM or exchange at Geneva or Turin airports.
Tipping
Tipping is not required in Italy but appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a service charge (servizio) of EUR 2-3 per person is often already included on the bill; check before adding extra. For good service without an included charge, round up 5-10% or leave EUR 1-2 per person. In bars, leave the small change from your coffee (EUR 0.20-0.50). For mountain guides, EUR 20-30 per day is standard if satisfied with the service.
Tap Water and Food Safety
Courmayeur’s tap water comes from mountain springs and is excellent, safe, and delicious to drink. There is even a public drinking fountain on Via Roma with water from the Monte Bianco aquifer. Restaurants will serve tap water if you ask for acqua del rubinetto, though many will also offer bottled water. Food safety standards are high throughout Italy. The local Fontina DOP cheese is made from unpasteurised milk and is safe to eat. Mountain hut (rifugio) food is simple but carefully prepared; major food incidents on the TMB are extremely rare.
Safety and Emergency Numbers
Courmayeur is very safe with low crime rates. The main safety concerns are mountain-related: avalanches, altitude sickness, and getting lost on trails. The European emergency number is 112, which connects to police, ambulance, and mountain rescue. The Courmayeur Mountain Rescue (Soccorso Alpino) can be reached directly at +39 0165 842068. For non-emergency medical issues, the Courmayeur Medical Centre (Poliambulatorio) is at Viale Monte Bianco 21, open weekdays 08:00-18:00. The nearest hospital is Ospedale Regionale Umberto Parini in Aosta (32km, roughly 30 minutes by car). Always carry a charged phone, water, and an extra layer when hiking above 2,000m, even in summer.
Travel Insurance
Standard travel insurance covering medical expenses is sufficient for most visitors. If you plan to ski off-piste, ice climb, or do mountaineering, check that your policy covers mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation: a helicopter rescue from a crevasse on Mont Blanc can cost EUR 5,000-10,000. Membership in the Italian Alpine Club (CAI, EUR 48/year) includes mountain rescue insurance valid throughout Europe. Join at cai.it before your trip.
