Courmayeur sits at 1,224 metres (4,016 feet) in the Italian Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest peak at 4,810 metres. The altitude dictates everything about the weather here: cold snowy winters that make it one of Italy’s top ski destinations, mild summers that draw hikers and mountaineers from across Europe, and rapid weather changes that can bring snow in any month of the year. The ski season runs from late November to mid-April, while July and August are the peak months for hiking and the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres. See our best time to visit guide for more details. Check our things to do in Courmayeur for more details.
Courmayeur Weather by Month: Monthly Climate Data
All temperatures and rainfall data below are averages recorded at the Courmayeur weather station (1,220m elevation). Mountain weather changes fast: a sunny morning can become an afternoon snowstorm in any season above 2,000 metres. Always check the local avalanche bulletin (Bollettino Valanghe) at aineva.it before heading into the backcountry between November and May. Check our events and festivals calendar for more details.
January
Average daytime high of 1°C (34°F), nighttime low of -6°C (21°F). January is the coldest month with 75mm of precipitation across roughly 8 snow days, accumulating 80-120cm of fresh snow at resort level. Ski conditions are typically excellent on Courmayeur’s 100km of pistes between 1,224m and 2,755m. Daylight is short: sunrise around 08:05 and sunset by 17:00. The Skyway Monte Bianco runs daily but the upper terraces at 3,466m can drop to -20°C with wind chill. Check our neighborhoods guide for more details.
February
Daytime highs reach 3°C (37°F), lows around -5°C (23°F). Precipitation drops slightly to 68mm. February typically delivers the most reliable snow base of the season with 150-250cm at mid-mountain. The resort is busiest during Italian school holidays (settimana bianca) which vary by region but usually fall in the second or third week. Sunshine increases to about 5 hours per day. Off-piste conditions in Val Ferret and Val Veny are at their peak. Check our where to stay guide for more details.
March
Highs climb to 7°C (45°F), lows to -2°C (28°F). March brings 80mm of precipitation, a mix of snow at altitude and rain in town. The snowpack begins to consolidate with spring conditions: firm mornings, slushy afternoons below 2,000m. Daylight stretches to 12 hours by month’s end. This is the best month for ski touring and the Courmayeur-Chamonix off-piste traverse (guide required). Easter weekends bring heavy Italian and French visitor numbers if they fall in March. Check our travel tips and FAQ for more details.
April
Daytime highs of 12°C (54°F), lows of 2°C (36°F). The ski season typically closes around April 13-15, though the Vallée Blanche glacier run on the French side stays open into May. April receives 90mm of precipitation, the shift to rain accelerates snowmelt below 2,000m. Town restaurants and shops begin their spring closure period (many close from mid-April to early June). The Skyway Monte Bianco operates year-round but check for maintenance closures in April/May.
May
Highs of 16°C (61°F), lows of 6°C (43°F). May is the wettest month with 105mm of rainfall over roughly 12 rainy days. Lower hiking trails begin to clear of snow but anything above 2,000m remains snow-covered. Many hotels and restaurants are closed for the shoulder season (chiusura stagionale), reopening in early June. The Courmayeur-Mont Blanc cable car runs but with reduced hours. Wildflowers start blooming in the valleys by late May.
June
Highs of 20°C (68°F), lows of 10°C (50°F). Precipitation drops to 85mm. This is when Courmayeur reawakens: hotels reopen, hiking trails become accessible up to 2,500m, and the Val Ferret and Val Veny valleys turn green. The Skyway Monte Bianco operates full summer hours (typically 08:30-16:30). The Tour du Mont Blanc hiking season begins in mid-June when most high passes clear. Expect some residual snow on north-facing trails above 2,300m.
July
Highs of 23°C (73°F), lows of 12°C (54°F). July is the driest month with only 65mm of rain across roughly 8 rainy days. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains: start hikes early (06:00-07:00) and be below treeline by 14:00. The Tour du Mont Blanc is in full swing with 200-300 hikers per day passing through. All lifts and cable cars run at full summer capacity. Sunset is around 21:20, giving nearly 16 hours of daylight.
August
Highs of 22°C (72°F), lows of 11°C (52°F). Similar to July but with slightly more rain at 80mm. August 15 (Ferragosto) is the peak of Italian summer holidays: Courmayeur is packed, hotel prices reach their annual maximum, and restaurant reservations are essential. The Courmayeur trail running scene peaks with several mountain races. Hiking conditions are optimal with all high passes open. The QC Terme thermal baths in nearby Pré-Saint-Didier (3km) are a popular post-hike stop.
September
Highs of 18°C (64°F), lows of 8°C (46°F). September is arguably the best month for hiking and photography: stable weather, autumn colours emerging in the larch forests, and half the August crowds. Rainfall increases to 90mm. The Tour du Mont Blanc season winds down by mid-September as rifugi begin to close. Lifts continue running through the third week of September. Daytime temperatures are perfect for the Skyway Monte Bianco, though bring layers for the summit at 3,466m where it is often below freezing.
October
Highs of 13°C (55°F), lows of 3°C (37°F). The autumn shoulder season: most lifts and mountain huts close by October 10-15. Rainfall is 100mm and the first snowfall typically arrives in the second half of October above 2,000m. Town enters another quiet period with reduced hotel and restaurant availability. The larch forests turn brilliant gold (typically October 10-25), making this a spectacular time for valley walks if the weather cooperates. The Skyway Monte Bianco usually closes for annual maintenance in October or early November.
November
Highs of 6°C (43°F), lows of -2°C (28°F). November is the transition month: 95mm of precipitation increasingly falls as snow above 1,500m. The ski resort begins snowmaking operations once overnight temperatures are consistently below -2°C. Most of the town is in shoulder-season closure until late November. The ski season typically opens around November 28-30, snow conditions permitting. Early-season skiing is usually on artificial snow on the Checrouit side.
December
Highs of 2°C (36°F), lows of -5°C (23°F). December delivers 85mm of precipitation with reliable snow above 1,500m. The Christmas-New Year period (December 22 to January 6) is peak season: hotels book out months in advance and lift queues are the longest of the year. Courmayeur’s Christmas market runs in the pedestrian centre with local crafts and Aosta Valley specialities. The Skyway Monte Bianco operates winter hours. Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve dinners at mountain rifugi require reservations by November.
