Best Neighborhoods in Courmayeur

Italy › Valle d’Aosta › Courmayeur

Courmayeur is compact but divided into distinct hamlets (frazioni) spread along the Dora Baltea river valley at the foot of Mont Blanc. Each area has a different character, elevation, and access to the mountains. Choosing where to base yourself affects your daily logistics, especially in winter when walking between frazioni in ski boots is not practical. Here is a breakdown of Courmayeur’s neighbourhoods and who each one suits best. See our weather by month for more details. Check our best time to visit guide for more details.

Best Neighborhoods in Courmayeur: Courmayeur Centro

Courmayeur Centro is the pedestrianised historic core, centred on Via Roma and the surrounding lanes. This is where you will find the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels. The pedestrian-only policy makes it pleasant for evening passeggiate but means you cannot drive to your hotel door. Most hotels in this area offer parking 200-500 metres away or valet service. Via Roma has the best shopping in the Aosta Valley: brands like Colmar, Napapijri, and Herno sit alongside local food shops selling Fontina DOP and Valle d’Aosta wines. The central area gives you walking access to the Dolonne gondola (10 minutes on foot) but you will need the free ski shuttle (navetta) to reach the Checrouit lift at Entrèves (8 minutes by bus). Best for first-time visitors who want restaurants and bars on their doorstep. Average hotel prices: EUR 180-450/night in winter, EUR 150-350 in summer. Best Neighborhoods in Courmayeur: Entrèves and La Palud

Entrèves is a quiet hamlet 3km north of Courmayeur centre, located right at the entrance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel. Its main draw is La Palud, the base station of the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car. Entrèves has the best direct mountain access in Courmayeur: you are at the foot of the Val Ferret hiking trails and 200 metres from the Skyway base. The hamlet has roughly 6 restaurants, a small grocery store, and several hotels but far fewer dining and shopping options than Centro. The SAVDA bus connects Entrèves to Courmayeur centre (EUR 2, 5 minutes) roughly every 30 minutes in summer and winter. The free ski shuttle runs to the Dolonne and Checrouit lifts. Best for hikers doing the Tour du Mont Blanc (the trail passes through Entrèves), climbers heading to the Skyway each morning, and anyone who prioritises mountain access over town amenities. Average hotel prices: EUR 120-350/night. Check our events and festivals calendar for more details.

Best Neighborhoods in Courmayeur: Dolonne

Dolonne sits on the south bank of the Dora Baltea river, facing Courmayeur Centro across a footbridge. This is Courmayeur’s ski-in, ski-out area: the Dolonne gondola runs directly from the hamlet up to Plan Checrouit (1,708m), and you can ski back to within 100 metres of most Dolonne accommodation on the Internationale red run. The hamlet has roughly 4 restaurants and a small supermarket. The walk into Courmayeur Centro takes 10 minutes across the footbridge. Dolonne is the best choice for ski-first visitors who want to maximise time on the slopes. In summer, the Val Veny trailhead starts from Dolonne, and it is quieter than Centro. Average hotel prices: EUR 130-300/night in winter, EUR 100-250 in summer. Check our where to stay guide for more details.

Best Neighborhoods in Courmayeur: Val Ferret and Val Veny (Valley Stays)

For those who want the most remote, nature-immersed experience, the two valleys that branch off Courmayeur offer a handful of hotels, rifugi, and agriturismi. Val Ferret runs northeast toward the Swiss border with Mont Blanc’s eastern face as the backdrop. Accommodation here ranges from the luxury Auberge de La Maison in Entrèves (at the valley entrance) to the Rifugio Elena at 2,062m (summer only, half-board EUR 65). Val Veny runs southwest with the Miage Glacier and Brenva Glacier at its head. Accommodation is limited to a couple of small hotels near the Notre-Dame de GuĂ©rison sanctuary and the Rifugio Elisabetta (2,195m, summer only). A car is essential for valley stays outside Entrèves, as summer bus service is limited to 4-6 trips per day. Best for experienced hikers, climbers, and anyone seeking true mountain isolation.
