Courmayeur has two distinct peak seasons that cater to completely different travellers: winter (late December to early April) for skiing and snowboarding, and summer (July to mid-September) for hiking, mountaineering, and the Tour du Mont Blanc. The shoulder months, May, June, October, and November, offer lower prices and quiet trails but come with the trade-off of reduced services, lift closures, and unpredictable mountain weather. There is no single best month for everyone; it depends entirely on what you want to do. See our weather by month for more details. Check our things to do in Courmayeur for more details.
Best Time to Visit Courmayeur for Skiing: Late January to Early March
The sweet spot for Courmayeur skiing is late January through the first week of March. The Christmas and New Year period (December 22 to January 6) has reliable snow but the highest prices and longest lift queues of the season. Italian school holidays (Settimana Bianca) fall in February and vary by region: Lombardy and Piedmont typically take the second week, while southern regions take the third or fourth week. For the best balance of snow conditions, prices, and crowd levels, book January 15-31 or March 1-15. The snow base at mid-mountain averages 150-250cm during this window. Avoid the week before and after Easter if it falls in late March or April, that is when half of Italy heads to the mountains. Check our events and festivals calendar for more details.
Best Time to Visit Courmayeur for Hiking and Mont Blanc: July to Early September
For the Tour du Mont Blanc and high-altitude hiking (above 2,500m), the reliable window is July 1 to September 15. July delivers the driest weather (65mm, 8 rain days) and longest daylight (sunset at 21:20 in early July). August is equally good for hiking with similar temperatures (highs of 22Β°C) but brings larger crowds, especially around August 15 (Ferragosto) when all of Italy is on holiday. The first two weeks of September are the sleeper pick: stable weather, golden larch forests, half the August crowds, and all lifts and rifugi still operating. Mountain huts begin closing around September 15-20. The Skyway Monte Bianco operates year-round but its summer hours (08:30-16:30) end in early September, switching to 09:00-15:30. Check our neighborhoods guide for more details.
Best Time to Visit Courmayeur for Low Prices: May and October
The shoulder seasons bring Courmayeur’s lowest prices but also the fewest services. May is the quietest month: 4-star hotels that charge EUR 350-500 per night in August drop to EUR 120-180, but roughly 60% of hotels and restaurants are closed for the spring break (chiusura stagionale). October is similar with EUR 100-150 rates at mid-range hotels, though 40-50% of businesses close from October 10 until the ski season opens in late November. The trade-off is real: low prices but limited dining options, closed lifts, and weather that can deliver rain, snow, or brilliant sunshine on any given day. If you are flexible and want solitude on valley trails, book the first week of October for peak larch colours and the best chance of stable weather before the autumn snows arrive. Check our where to stay guide for more details.
Best Time to Visit Courmayeur for Festivals and Events
Courmayeur hosts two major annual events: Celtica, a Celtic music and culture festival held over 4 days in early July (attendance roughly 30,000), and Courmayeur Noir in Festival, a film-noir and crime literature festival held for 5 days in early December. For Celtica, book accommodation by March as the town sells out. For Noir, book by October. The Courmayeur Christmas market runs from early December through January 6 in the pedestrian centre. There is also the Tor des Geants, a 330km ultra-trail race that passes through Courmayeur in mid-September, drawing several thousand runners and supporters. Months to Avoid and Why
November is the worst month for a Courmayeur visit: the Skyway Monte Bianco is typically closed for annual maintenance, the ski resort has not opened yet, hiking trails above 2,000m are snowbound, 70% of businesses are shuttered between seasons, and the weather is grey with 95mm of precipitation falling as cold rain in town. Late April through late May is the spring closure: skiing is over, hiking trails are muddy with snow patches, and most of the town’s hotels and restaurants are closed. August 10-20 (Ferragosto period) is the busiest and most expensive window of the year: if you must come in August, book everything including hotels, restaurants, Skyway tickets, and mountain hut beds at least 3 months in advance.
