Capri has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The island sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, and its exposed position means it catches cooling sea breezes even in July and August. Sea temperatures peak at 26°C (79°F) in August, making swimming comfortable from June through early October. See our best time to visit Capri for more details. The island gets about 850mm (33 inches) of rain per year, concentrated between October and March, with November typically the wettest month at around 140mm. Capri Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)
Spring is when Capri wakes up. March starts cool at 15°C (59°F) with about 10 rainy days, but by April temperatures climb to 18°C (64°F) and the island’s wisteria and bougainvillea come into full bloom. May is the sweet spot: highs of 23°C (73°F), roughly 6 rainy days, and sea temperatures reaching 19°C (66°F). The first beach clubs at Marina Piccola unofficially open in May, though the water is still brisk. See our things to do in Capri for more details. The Gardens of Augustus are at their peak in April and May, and the Monte Solaro chairlift in Anacapri runs daily with clear-sky views stretching to Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast.
Capri Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)
Summer is hot, dry, and crowded. June delivers 27°C (81°F) highs and just 3-4 rainy days, making it the best month for combining warm swimming (22°C/72°F sea) with thinner crowds than July/August. July and August both peak at 30°C (86°F) with sea temperatures of 25-26°C (77-79°F). Humidity hovers around 65-70%, but the sea breeze on the Piazzetta and Marina Grande keeps it bearable. The Blue Grotto gets longest opening hours in summer (9am to 5pm), but the queue can stretch to 2 hours by midday. August 15 (Ferragosto) is the absolute peak: hotel prices triple, and the Capri travel tips from Naples sells out days in advance.
Capri Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)
September is arguably the best month on Capri: 26°C (79°F) highs, 24°C (75°F) sea temperatures, and the August crowds thin dramatically after the first week. Rain picks up to 70mm with about 7 wet days, but showers are typically short afternoon bursts. October brings 22°C (72°F) and the first real autumn rains at 110mm. The Settembrata Anacapri harvest festival runs in early September. By November, temperatures drop to 17°C (63°F), rainfall surges to 140mm across 12 rainy days, and many hotels and restaurants close for the winter from mid-November. See our Capri events and festivals for more details. The Blue Grotto often closes in November due to rough seas.
Capri Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)
Winters are mild but wet, with highs of 13-14°C (55-57°F) and lows around 5-6°C (41-43°F). December and January each bring about 12 rainy days. Snow on Capri is extremely rare (the last significant snowfall was in 1956), but the island can feel damp and deserted. Roughly 60% of hotels and restaurants close from mid-November through March, with the exception of the Christmas and New Year period when luxury hotels like JK Place and Capri Tiberio Palace stay open. February brings the first hints of spring with 5 daily sun hours. The Capri Hollywood International Film Festival runs in late December/early January, drawing a smaller winter crowd. See our best neighborhoods in Capri for more details. See our where to stay in Capri for more details. Ferry service from Naples runs year-round but on a reduced schedule, and hydrofoils are sometimes cancelled in heavy seas.
