Spring is the best time to visit Zaragoza for outdoor sightseeing. Daytime highs climb from 18°C (64°F) in March to 25°C (77°F) in May, ideal for walking the Old Town, the Ebro riverbanks, and Parque Grande. The Cierzo eases significantly by late April. Easter week (Semana Santa) brings impressive religious processions through the city centre, though accommodation books up and prices rise 20 to 30%. April has the most rain days (6) of any spring month, but showers are typically brief afternoon events, not all-day rain. May offers the best balance of warm temperatures, low wind, and pre-summer pricing.
Summer (June to August): Best to Avoid
Summer is the worst time to visit Zaragoza. July and August both average 32°C (90°F) highs, with 15 to 20 days per month above 35°C (95°F). The city centre radiates heat from stone buildings and narrow streets, making midday walking exhausting. Many independent shops, restaurants, and bars close for 2 to 3 weeks in August as owners take their own holidays. Hotel rates drop 15 to 25% compared to spring, which is the one upside, but you will pay for it in comfort. If you must visit in summer, book a hotel with air conditioning and a pool (Hotel Reina Petronila has both), schedule outdoor activities before 11am or after 7pm, and use the midday for the Goya Museum or CaixaForum, both fully air-conditioned. Autumn is the best time to visit Zaragoza overall. September stays warm at 27°C (81°F) but without summer’s intensity. October brings the Fiestas del Pilar (week of October 12), Zaragoza biggest annual celebration with parades, concerts, flower offerings, and fireworks. This is the most atmospheric time to be in the city, but book accommodation 3 to 4 months ahead, rates are 30 to 50% higher during the festival week. November sees the Cierzo return and temperatures drop to 15°C (59°F) highs, but hotel rates fall to their lowest of the year (outside Christmas markets).
