Semana Santa (Holy Week) – Late March or April
Salamanca’s Holy Week processions are among the most solemn in Castile and Leon, featuring 16 confraternities (cofradias) carrying elaborate pasos (religious floats) through the Old Town’s narrow sandstone streets. The most dramatic procession is the Procesion del Silencio on Holy Thursday at midnight, when the streets go dark and the only sound is the beat of a single drum. The procession leaves from the Church of La Vera Cruz. Processions run daily from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, primarily between 19:00 and midnight. Today it is a city-wide picnic celebration: families and students head to the banks of the River Tormes and surrounding parks with hornazo, a substantial pastry filled with chorizo, loin, and hard-boiled eggs. FACYL International Arts Festival – Early June
The Festival Internacional de las Artes de Castilla y Leon (FACYL) takes over Salamanca for a week in early June with a programme of contemporary music, theatre, dance, circus, and street art. Venues include the Plaza Mayor, Patio de Escuelas at the university, and the CAEM (Centro de las Artes Escenicas y de la Musica) on Avenida de las Artes. The daytime fairground (recinto ferial) in the La Aldehuela district has rides, games, and food stalls. Evening events include bullfights at the Plaza de Toros de La Glorieta (tickets 20 to 80 EUR), open-air concerts in Plaza Mayor, and casetas (fair tents) serving local wine and tapas. Nochevieja Universitaria – Mid-December
On a Thursday or Friday in mid-December (the date shifts each year to avoid the exam period), up to 30,000 university students from across Spain flood Plaza Mayor for an unofficial New Year’s Eve celebration. At midnight, instead of grapes, students eat four gummy sweets and wash them down with cheap cava. The celebration then spills into the Van Dyck nightlife zone around Calle Van Dyck and continues until dawn. The exact date is announced in November via university social media channels. Other Notable Events in Salamanca
Fiesta de San Juan de Sahagun (June 12) honours Salamanca’s patron saint with a procession from the cathedrals to the Church of San Juan de Sahagun.
