Average daytime highs range from 11°C (52°F) in January to 31°C (88°F) in July and August. Rain falls mostly in autumn, with November averaging 120mm, while July sees just 25mm. Snow is rare but not impossible: the last significant snowfall inside the walls was in 2012.

High 11°C (52°F), low 2°C (36°F). January is Lucca’s coldest month. Days are short, with about 4 hours of sunshine. Rain averages 70mm over 9 wet days. The city walls are quieter and you’ll have Piazza dell’Anfiteatro mostly to yourself. Bring a warm coat, scarf, and waterproof shoes. Many smaller restaurants close for the first two weeks of the month.

High 12°C (54°F), low 3°C (37°F). Slightly warmer than January but still cool. Rain drops to 60mm over 8 days. Carnival (Carnevale) sometimes falls in February, bringing costumed parades to the streets inside the walls. The almond trees in the Botanical Garden start budding by late February.

High 15°C (59°F), low 5°C (41°F). Spring begins with wildflowers appearing on the 16th-century bastions. Sunshine increases to 5 hours daily. Rain averages 65mm. The city shakes off winter; outdoor cafes on Via Fillungo start setting up tables. Bring layers: mornings are cold but afternoons can feel warm in the sun. Pack a light waterproof jacket.

High 18°C (64°F), low 8°C (46°F). One of the best months to visit. Seven hours of daily sunshine, moderate rainfall at 75mm. The wisteria blooms on Piazza San Frediano are spectacular. The city walls’ tree-lined promenade fills with locals walking and cycling. Perfect weather for climbing Guinigi Tower and lunch outdoors.

High 23°C (73°F), low 12°C (54°F). Eight hours of daily sunshine. Rainfall is 65mm. The weather is near-perfect: warm but not hot, green countryside, long daylight hours. The Lucca Botanical Garden (founded 1820) is at its peak. Book accommodation well ahead as this is a popular month for European visitors.

High 27°C (81°F), low 16°C (61°F). Summer begins. Nine hours of sunshine, rainfall at 45mm. Evenings are warm enough for outdoor concerts: the Lucca Summer Festival kicks off in late June on the Piazza Napoleone. Humidity is manageable compared to July/August. Still comfortable for cycling the 4.2km wall circuit.

High 31°C (88°F), low 18°C (64°F). Lucca’s hottest month with 10 hours of sunshine. Rainfall plummets to 25mm over 3 days. The city walls provide shade for walking and cycling. Afternoons can be uncomfortably hot: plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings. The Lucca Summer Festival brings major international acts to Piazza Napoleone.

High 30°C (86°F), low 18°C (64°F). Almost as hot as July with 9 hours of sunshine. Rain at 40mm. Ferragosto (August 15) is the peak Italian holiday: some family-run shops and restaurants close for the entire week. Locals head to the Versilia coast (Viareggio is 25km away). The city feels quieter but the heat is intense.

High 26°C (79°F), low 14°C (57°F). Another excellent month. Seven hours of sunshine, rainfall at 85mm (autumn rains begin). The crowds thin after the first week. Perfect temperatures for exploring the walls and outdoor dining. The Settembre Lucchese festival runs through the month with markets and cultural events.

High 20°C (68°F), low 10°C (50°F). Days are mild with 5 hours of sunshine. Rain increases to 120mm over 10 days. Lucca Comics and Games (late October/early November) draws 300,000+ visitors regardless of weather. The countryside turns golden. Pack layers and a reliable rain jacket.

High 14°C (57°F), low 6°C (43°F). The wettest month at 120mm over 12 days. Only 3 hours of daily sunshine. Lucca Comics starts at the very end of October and runs into early November, transforming the city into a pop culture festival. Outside the festival, November is quiet: many hotels offer lower rates. Bring waterproof footwear: the stone streets inside the walls get slick.

High 11°C (52°F), low 3°C (37°F). Cold and damp with 85mm of rain over 10 days. The Christmas market in Piazza San Michele runs from early December through Epiphany (January 6). The city decorates with lights strung across the narrow medieval streets. Hotel prices are at their lowest outside the Christmas week.
