Snow is extremely rare in Pisa, occurring perhaps once every 5 to 10 years. You will need a warm coat and umbrella. The Leaning Tower complex has shorter hours, typically 10:00 to 17:00, and some smaller churches close for parts of the day.

By late February, the first almond blossoms appear in the Orto Botanico. Hotel rates are at annual lows, with four-star rooms from 70 euros per night.

March

Average high 15 degrees C (59 degrees F), low 5 degrees C (41 degrees F). Rainfall 65 mm over 10 days. Spring begins with noticeable warming by mid-March. The Piazza dei Miracoli starts getting busier around the 17th (St. Patrick’s Day brings American student groups). Pack layers; a lightweight waterproof jacket works fine. Daylight stretches to about 12 hours by the equinox.

April

Average high 18 degrees C (64 degrees F), low 7 degrees C (45 degrees F). Rainfall 70 mm over 11 days, but showers tend to be brief. Easter crowds can fill the Piazza dei Miracoli; book Leaning Tower tickets at least 2 weeks ahead.

May

Average high 22 degrees C (72 degrees F), low 11 degrees C (52 degrees F). Rainfall drops to 55 mm over 8 days. Near-perfect sightseeing weather. The university students are still in session, giving the city a lively feel around Piazza delle Vettovaglie and the lungarni. Sunscreen becomes necessary; UV index reaches 7 on clear days.

June

Average high 26 degrees C (79 degrees F), low 15 degrees C (59 degrees F). Rainfall just 40 mm over 6 days, the driest month alongside July. Humidity can make it feel warmer than the thermometer suggests. The Luminara di San Ranieri on June 16 sees thousands of candles along the Arno, the biggest Pisa event of the year. Book accommodation months in advance for this date.

July

Average high 30 degrees C (86 degrees F), low 18 degrees C (64 degrees F). Rainfall 25 mm over 4 days. The hottest and driest month. The Arno riverfront provides some breeze in the evening. Gelato at La Bottega del Gelato on Via Santa Maria costs 2.50 euros for two scoops.

August

Average high 29 degrees C (84 degrees F), low 17 degrees C (63 degrees F). Rainfall 45 mm over 6 days, often as sudden afternoon thunderstorms. Many small restaurants close for the entire month (ferie). Tourist numbers peak as Italians take their own holidays. The Leaning Tower ticket queue can exceed 2 hours without pre-booking. Sea temperature at nearby Marina di Pisa reaches 25 degrees C (77 degrees F).

October

Average high 20 degrees C (68 degrees F), low 10 degrees C (50 degrees F). Rainfall 120 mm over 12 days, the wettest month. Heavy rain can flood streets near the Arno, though the city centre sits slightly elevated. The Leaning Tower looks dramatic against autumn cloud formations. Daylight shrinks to about 11 hours by month end. An umbrella and waterproof shoes are essential.

November

Average high 14 degrees C (57 degrees F), low 6 degrees C (43 degrees F). Rainfall 115 mm over 13 days, the month with most rainy days. Grey skies dominate, and the Arno rises noticeably. Museums are free on the first Sunday.
