Most visitors first see Savona from the deck of an MSC cruise ship gliding into the harbour, the Priamar Fortress rising on the left and the medieval Torre Leon Pancaldo marking the entrance to the old town. Step ashore and you’re in a city that doesn’t try too hard to impress: the Ligurian character is matter-of-fact, the architecture is a layered mix of medieval, Renaissance and industrial, and the rhythm of daily life still revolves around the port, the focacceria, and the evening passeggiata. Spend two days here and you’ll understand why Savonese locals describe their city as vera (real) rather than bella (beautiful). That said, the Sistine Chapel behind the Baroque cathedral is a genuine Renaissance treasure, the caruggi of the old town are as atmospheric as any in Genoa, and the beach at Zinola on a July afternoon rivals far more famous stretches of the Riviera.

The olive harvest in the hills makes this a good season for food-focused travel.
• Winter (December to February): Highs of 11-12°C (52-54°F), lows of 4-6°C (39-43°F), and 4-5 hours of daily sunshine. It rains about 9 days per month, totalling 82-104mm.
