Flores is small (143 km²) but rugged, and the west coast road is one of the most dramatic but challenging drives in the Azores. A rental car is near-essential. Here is how to get around Flores.
Getting Around Flores: Rental Cars
Rental car is the only practical way to explore independently. Ilha Verde operates at FLW Airport. Rates start at €45-60 per day. The main road is in good condition. The west coast road between Fajãzinha and Ponta Delgada is narrow, single-track in sections, and winding. Passing places are marked. The caldera access road is unpaved. After heavy rain, check conditions before attempting the west coast road or unpaved tracks. Automatic cars are very scarce. Book 1-2 months ahead for summer. Fill the tank in Santa Cruz: no other fuel stations exist.
Getting Around Flores: Taxis
Taxis operate from Santa Cruz. Sample fares: to Fajãzinha/Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro €30-35, to Fajã Grande €35-40, airport to town €8-10. For a half-day tour of the west coast, negotiate a rate with a driver (€80-100 for 4 hours). Arrange pickups in advance, especially on the west coast where taxis do not wait. Most drivers speak basic English.
Getting Around Flores: Public Buses
Flores has a minimal bus service with 1-2 daily departures on the main route from Santa Cruz to Lajes das Flores and Fajãzinha. The bus does not serve the caldera viewpoint or all of the west coast villages. Services are reduced on weekends and may not run on Sundays. The bus is not practical for sightseeing.
