Flores Events: Festa do Emigrante
The defining event of Flores’ calendar, held in July in Santa Cruz. The festival honours the island’s emigrant diaspora , generations of Florentinos who left for the United States and Canada , and welcomes those who return. The programme includes traditional music and dance performances, a procession, food stalls, and a general atmosphere of reunion and celebration. Accommodation across the island is tight during the festival, which typically runs for several days in mid-July. It is a genuinely emotional and community-driven event, far from a tourist spectacle.
Flores Events: Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Held in Santa Cruz in September, this religious festival draws pilgrims from across the island and from Corvo. The centrepiece is a procession venerating Our Lady of Remedies through the streets of Santa Cruz. It is a quieter, more devotional event than the Festa do Emigrante, but deeply traditional.
Flores Events: Festas do Divino Espírito Santo
Like every Azorean island, Flores celebrates the Holy Spirit festivals from May to July. The largest celebrations are in Santa Cruz and Lajes das Flores. Visitors are welcome at the communal meals (sopas). These events are the most authentic expression of Azorean culture you can witness.
