Flores

Flores is the westernmost island of the Azores and, by most accounts, the most beautiful in the archipelago. Named for the flowers that carpet its volcanic landscape, this 143 km² island with about 3,800 residents is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of cascading waterfalls, hydrangea-lined crater lakes, and black basalt cliffs plunging into the Atlantic. The island’s waterfalls swell with the first autumn storms, creating spectacular viewing from safe lookouts.
• Winter (December to February): The wettest, windiest season with 160-200mm of monthly rain and frequent gales. Temperatures stay mild at 16°C (61°F) but feel colder in the wind. Many guesthouses close for at least part of the winter. Intrepid photographers come for the storm-light and massive waves breaking against the west coast cliffs. Inter-island flights from Ponta Delgada can be disrupted by weather.
